Questions & Answers

If my dog was previously eating Royal Canin Kidney Diet "A", do I need to slowly transition her to "S", or can I go right into feeding her the "S" version? I thought they were more or less the same, but she has a sensitive stomach.

My 2 dogs are currently on renal support a Royal canin, what do the different letters stand for with this brand ex A, F...
Answer by ChewyJun 04, 2018
The different letters mean different things for each food: Aroma, Savor & Flavorful. They also have slightly different formula's along with different nutrient profiles. It is recommended to discuss with your Veterinarian the best option for your pet.

I have a 15 year old toy poodle that has no teeth. She eats small bites Blue Buffalo adult toy breed just fine but the vet has recommended a switch due to a decrease in kidney function. Is the Royal Canin Renal Support S smaller kibble that she will be able to eat?
Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2018
This kibble is meant to be a good size for small to large breeds. The kibble in the Royal Canin renal diets differ in shape. The support S kibble comes in a crescent shape. Because your dog doesn't have teeth, it's recommended to soften the food. Refer to your vet for the best additions (broth, water, wet food) or recommendations for how to deal with this particular medical/dental issue.

what shape is this one
Answer by ChewyJul 21, 2017
This kibble is in a crescent shape.

Finding a silver lining in a change of diet

Finding out my dog has renal disease was not a happy thing, but changing his diet to this renal support food turned out to have an up side. He loves it! He had become apathetic about his former dry plus canned food mix and I was worried he might stop eating altogether. But he seems to actually prefer this dry food, which I moisten slightly when I give it to him. It even smells good to me, which surprised me too. I just hope this new food does my dog some good in the long run.

Not an option

I took my small dog to the vet with issues and her vet diagnosed kidney disease. The vet prescribed several food options and one of those was Royal Canine Renal support. Unfortunately, my little dog would not eat this food. She wouldn’t even approach the bowl! According to her, it didn’t smell appetizing. She was adamant! She went DAYS without eating! I finally had to relent and go back to Hills Science Diet for sensitive skin and stomach. It is not made for kidney issues but she only weighs 15 pounds to begin with and she lost weight SO quickly when she refused to eat that I was afraid I’d lose her. In fairness, she won’t or can’t eat any of the other kidney support foods either. But I must agree with her. This food smells terrible.

My dog loves this

My dog was Diagnosed with kidney disease and suggested that I switch my dog to this food, but warned that some dogs won't eat "special diet foods". Well my dog absolutely loves this, but the even better news is that we had her blood work retested, and in 6 months her kidney values have improved!!

How can I get him to eat this?

After some concern over Max's kidneys, his vet urged us to try Royal Canin, the low-protein food. I began mixing it in with his usual Trader Joe's Holistic Canine food, which he's had for years, always augmenting it with a bit of boiled chicken or tuna. Gradually removed the TJ's and after exhausting the first bag of Royal Canin, bought the big bag. Surprise! Max hates it. He cherrypicks the garnish and I have to dump the rest. I'm constantly throwing out this expensive kibble (and picking it off the floor where he scatters it). And I've got about 15 pounds left!

Dog with kidney/liver issues

For these issues the Vet tells you to cut protein. Tried two other dry food for this diet. She drops the pieces outside the dish. With Royal Canin she scarfs it down. Picky. Great food, spendy but worth it so far.

My picky eater is eating this

In March we learned about my dogs Kidney issues. We tried the renal support A first.. then after we bought the 3rd bag he just stopped eating it. So started on the S today and he is eating it! Will mix it in with his other food for a week or so. So far so good.

Dog will not eat it

Still trying to get my dog to eat this but I have not had any luck yet. Food seems ok but my dog has gotten super picky now that he has renal disease and does not like this food.

Royal Canin renal support- S dry dog food

Our 18+ year old sheltie, has mild renal insufficiency, so the vet said to put him on a lower protein diet and suggested this brand. We also got the wet dog food and he eats some of both daily. His renal blood tests have since remained stable, so as long as he likes it, we like it.

He likes it

Our vet recommended a kidney diet due to signs of kidney failure. We were given samples of other leading brands of kidney dry and wet foods. The smell of the trials were so strong that he would back away from it. Reviews from others indicated their dogs liked the Royal Canin over other brands. We decided to try it and happy to report that he likes it.

Dog loves it!

I was very apprehensive as other customers said their dog would not eat it. Sophie (5yr old Rottie) loves it. I am hoping it helps slow her kidney disease. Chewy delivered in 2 days and I now have it on auto ship. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I tried Proplan Renal care but her stool was runny, so that brand did not agree with her
