About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Dogs

Worried About Your Dog’s Digestion?

Your dog’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Dog’s GI System

  1. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  2. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion; inflamation of the pancreas may be cause by a high fat diet or treats.
  3. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  4. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  5. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

How Nutrition Can Help

Talk to your vet about your concerns for your pet's GI tract health. Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin GI formula that is:

Highly palatable to encourage eating, even when appetite is decreased due to gastrointestinal upset

Balanced for good digestion, with a blend of fibers and prebiotics to support digestive health

Find The Perfect Balance

All Royal Canin Veterinary Diets require a veterinary prescription.

How big are the pieces of kibble? I have a small breed senior dog 8 pounds & wondering about the kibble size & if it is OK for smaller dogs. Thanks!!
Answer by ChewyFeb 15, 2018
The kibble can vary in size but is approximately half of an inch.

How do I get a prescription ?
Answer by ChewyJun 22, 2019
Our Vet Diet team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately. If you have a paper copy of your prescription, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax your prescription to 1-800-619-7973.

Is high fiber the same as the fiber response? My dog has a very sensitive GI tract and she needs what she has been eating which is the fiber response.
Answer by ChewyDec 13, 2020
Due to your individual pets specific health concern, we recommend consulting your Veterinarian to see what would be the safest fit for your pets current treatment plan.

Normal poops finally. FINALLY!!

It is more expensive than my own human food but after all the GI workups on my recently adopted pitbull mix over her first 5 months; regular labwork, expensive labwork, fecal tests, dewormers, probiotics, trying adding metamucil, psyllium husk powder, hippy all bran cereal, pumpkin- you NAME it... This food works. I tried Hills brand fiber Rx diet and Purina Rx EN fiber food when I couldn't get this brand. but neither are as good as this Royal Canin fiber diet. I have tried to mix it with regular high quality food but no dice. Poor Echo paid the price. Seeing her struggle to poop, having poopy accidents (that looked like a dropped pumpkin pie) , and the sheer frustration with wanting to find something that worked her. Do I wish it was not this friggin expensive? Yeah. But it works. And it doesn't cause my dogs digestive tract to cause a landslide everyday. I just resigned myself to my million dollar pup! Lucky duck

Good product

One of my dogs has been on this prescription food for several years. She does very well on it. However, in the last year it has been difficult to find this food. I was pleased that Chewy carried it and at a better price! Very glad to have it on auto ship too.

Never again

My 2 year old Lab mix has had anal gland issues since she was 6 months old. We just moved, and she got pretty constipated and picky about drinking water. I chatted with a vet on Chewy, who recommended this brand dog food, and I took it at face value - should’ve done research on the food, but I’m so desperate to help my pup. Started giving it to her (slowly, mixing her regular food with it), and she went 3 days with only pooping the amount of what equaled one normal size bowel movement. Read the ingredients on it… name something in the first 10 ingredients that’s good?! I’ll wait. These dog food companies are sickening with what they put in it. So, there’s $100 out the window. More fiber? I’ll stick to pumpkin purée and water in her meals with her normal food that contains ingredients I can pronounce. Prescription dog food is a joke.

I am so relieved to have found this food

This Royal Canin Gastrointestinal food has made the difference between constant diarrhea and unpredictable bowel movements and a regular elimination schedule for my cavapoo. I am so grateful! Plus she gobbles it up! I wish I had found it about six months earlier and saved us both a lot of heartache.

Great service

The Royal Canin veterinary diet has proved best for our dog who started having problems the day we brought him home from the shelter. We tried everything our local pet food store suggested, then a friend said get your vet to prescribe Royal Canin gastrointestinal high fiber dog food and it's worked for years. Recently, our vet couldn't get his supply so we turned to Chewy and it was delivered on time as promised. Thanks!

Helpful for stomach issues

My dog was having stomach issues periodically for several years. My vet ran ever test, bloodwork, X-rays, you name it. After spending thousands of dollars and my poor dog having to endure that, I went to another vet. He read all of her records, examined her and said she has chronic colitis and put Sadie on this food. She’s been doing great ever since and that was about 6 months ago. The icing on the cake is that she actually likes it. AAA+++

food changed???

Our previous orders had a kibble that was skinnier and a lighter color and we have been auto shipping this for a while and the new bag had thick dark kibble in it? See photo for difference. Now I’m worried my dogs stomach is going to get messed up from a different formula. Hopefully it’s just a thicker kibble and same formula…

I though our little girl ate everything...

Do you have one of those pups who eat pretty much anything...rocks, sticks, toys? Well, everything doesn't include this food. She essentially refused. I have spoken. ;-)

Beyond Helpful

My dog has suffered from some of the worst gastrointestinal problems. We were on multiple prescription foods and nothing helped. Finally this product from Royal Canin has been so helpful for her. We no longer here the upset stomach at night. She actually eats all her food and begs for more. Her bathroom movements have been solid since switching. Everything has just been better for her on this food.

Helped my dog's diarrhea

My dog, Leo, has had diarrhea almost constantly for the last 10 months. We've been in and out of the vet. We've tried tons of different prescriptions. But nothing has seemed to help. I was at my wit's end. With nothing left to lose, I decided to give this dog food a try! I knew the science behind fiber and how it can help bulk up stools. But wasn't expecting it to work this quickly. Leo has been on this food for a few weeks, and he's consistently having solid poops. So five stars for that! My only complaint is that this is relatively low-calorie. Leo was previously on the Low-Fat option from Royal Canin, and that was even lower cal. So it's been hard to keep weight on him. We're having to give him larger volumes of food to keep up with his calorie needs. I wish Royal Canin offered a High Fiber food that was higher calorie.
