About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Dogs

Worried About Your Dog’s Digestion?

Your dog’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Dog’s GI System

  1. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  2. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion; inflamation of the pancreas may be cause by a high fat diet or treats.
  3. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  4. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  5. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

How Nutrition Can Help

Talk to your vet about your concerns for your pet's GI tract health. Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin GI formula that is:

Easily digestible to help reduce the load on the gastrointestinal tract

Formulated with omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, and DHA to aid digestive health and antioxidants to support a healthy immune system

Highly palatable to encourage eating, even when appetite is decreased due to gastrointestinal upset

Balanced for good digestion, with a blend of fibers and prebiotics to support digestive health

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

Does this dog food cause the dog to drink more water?
Answer by ChewyOct 01, 2018
This food is not formulated to stimulate thirst.

How large are the pieces of food? My dog needs tiny bite-size pieces due to missing some teeth and this doesn’t show a picture or describe the size of it at all
Answer by ChewySep 23, 2021
I have included a picture of the kibble below for reference.

Is there a shelf life for the gastrointestinal low fat dry food? If so, could it be longer if some is stored in freezer or fridge?
Answer by ChewySep 03, 2018
The best way to keep the product fresh is to store it in the original bag, inside a container, and use within 1-2 months. Since the product is naturally preserved, the longer the bag is open, the more the food can oxidize. It is not recommended to freeze the food because that can draw out the moisture in the kibble and upon thawing, it can mold. Chewy guarantees that every bag you receive in an order will be at least 3 months from expiring.

The feeding guide only goes up to 88lbs. Is this not for big dogs? Are they guidelines that go up through 120lbs, or is it simple calculation using lower weights?
Answer by ChewyOct 18, 2020
Please refer to the photo below for the extended Feeding Guide. If you are unsure, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian.

Solved issue

14 yo dog who never had sensitive tummy, started with loose stools more on than off . Tried boiled chicken and rice, etc, probiotics then tried 2 other Rx kibble GI diets and one case Rx canned GI diet which wasnt doing much. This kibble was suggested by tech at my holistic vet she personally has used and I'm so glad. My dog has had normal stool since. I also bought the low fat cans Rx royal canin. Even if I don't use the Rx can , he's NOW, that his gut is stable, able to tolerate a variety of canned foods, fresh cooked foods, and freeze dried now to boost his diet. I attribute the improvement from this kibble.

Amazing food

My little 16 pound Havanese was severely sick, had her gallbladder removed, had severe pancreatitis, and her liver enzymes were the highest the internist had ever seen. Long story short, this food was part of what saved her life. She was in the ER, wouldn’t eat ANYTHING, had a feeding tube, and wasn’t doing very well. Her internist tried this food and she loved it. She has since recovered and is now on a very strict, low fat diet. I whiz this food up in a blender and add water, green beans, and fat free turkey, and she absolutely loves meal time! Incredible food, highly recommend.

Royal Canin low fat is the best!

My fur baby has been eating this food for over 3 years and I have seen a tremendous difference in his weight and stamina. Chewy has the best price on this food.

Didn't like it anymore

The vet prescribed this dog food because my dog triglycerides were high so needed a low fat dog food. Ordered the small bag to see if she like the food. And she did. The bag was already almost empty so I ordered the big bag. I opened the big bag she ate some and the next day she didn't want to eat it anymore. Her stomach got upset and I was feeding chicken and rice for 2 days. Then I tried to feed her the food again. And she didn't want to get near it anymore. My other dogs didn't either. They would smell it and walk away Now I need to find another low fat prescription food.

Cured her digestion issues

My poor Collie was suffering for over a year with fussy eating and frequent diahrea and precription meds. My vet suggested expensive bloodwork and the results showed she had pancreatitus and suggested this food. The positive results were immediate. Firm stools and incredible increase in energy and no more prescribed pills to help her loose stooled and upset stomach. She gobbels it up ith a Tablespoon of chicken breast just cause I spoil her.

Best Food for Cavaliers

Our King Charles had pancreatic issues as a pup. Began this food 7 years ago. He loves it every day and is in perfect health.

This stuff works....

I have been skeptical of prescription diets in the past - either the pet would refuse to eat them, or they did not seem to produce the intended result. All I can say is - I was wrong. This diet has completely reversed the acute necrotizing pancreatitis that our dog was going through! It is like he is a new dog! If your vet prescribes this, give it a try! Although it is expensive, it is LOTs cheaper than surgery, etc.!

Great for sensitive digestion

My 15 yr old wiener dog used to be able to eat ANYTHING and any dog food. Not any more. Tried many, organic, grain free, but no bueno. This dog food is the one for him and I'm so grateful for and it's speedy delivery and refund of food that didn't work for my boy.

Great Buy!

My fur baby had stomach issues when I adopted him 8 years ago. This is the only food recommended by our Vet for my fur baby and he really enjoys it. He has not had any more stomach issues.

A great lowfat dog food

My pups digestive system decided to begin rejecting her dry dog food. The vet recommended this food, easily digested and softens with hot water. She likes this food so much, I am transitioning my other pup onto this food.
