About Royal Canin Urinary Health for Dogs

Worried About Your Dog’s Urinary Health?

Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog’s health, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best urinary health solutions for your pet. Royal Canin works closely with veterinarians to develop dog formulas that support urinary tract and bladder health.

How Can Nutrition Help?

Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin Urinary dog food formula for your best friend. These special formulations can:

Dilute Urine

This helps your dog urinate more often, which can help minimize time for stones to form.

Lower RSS

RSS methodology predicts urine crystallization and is used to develop diets that reduce the risk of stone formation.

Maintain Balance

A precise mineral balance can also help prevent stones from forming.

Set Up Autoship for Consistent Delivery

Questions & Answers

I see that this product has corn ,corn gluten meal and wheat gluten. Please let me know if this is bad for my dogs stomach and does these products have any effects on her life span?
Answer by BethanyAug 03, 2023
These ingredients are just fine for your dog unless they have a grain allergy. Dogs that have food allergies are usually affected by the proteins (chicken, beef, lanb, etc) and not by the grain. Unless your vet has to you to only feed grain free, these ingredients are just fine for your dog. Also, many grain free diets have been linked to heart disease and other issues, so unless you HAVE to, do not feed a grain feed diet to your dog.

Do you carry this for small dogs
Answer by ChewyJun 13, 2018
Royal Canin does offer a small breed formula called Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Urinary SO Small Breed Dry Dog Food.

Hi I just want to know if this food is grain free??? My dogs love it but they scratch and chew at there selves all day long. When will it be available grain free????
Answer by ChewyMar 26, 2018
This formula contains grains.

Does this food increase urination in your dog? If so, is that healthy?
Answer by ChewyJan 04, 2018
This Food is a complete and balanced Veterinary Diet for adult dogs formulated to aid in the nutritional management of calcium oxalate and struvite urolithiasis. Increasing the urine volume simultaneously reduces the saturation of urine with calcium oxalate and struvite crystals.

Great Food, But Expensive

My GSD/Border mix, Sasha, was put on this food after emergency surgery for struvite bladder stones at almost 4 yrs of age. When she was nearly 14 (in 2020), the formula changed slightly (increase in % fat), & she developed pancreatitis. My vet recommended mixing this food with a lower fat food (Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight) & put her on a liver support supplement. In 3.5 months, her blood work was back to normal. I lost my girl in Dec 2021 at age 15.5, & she ate this food for nearly 12 years of her life. I am back checking the price due to the possibility that one of my new rescues (Old English/? mix) may have to be put on this as well. I can't believe how much the price has increased in less than 2 years. From Dec 2021 until now, it has increased nearly $22 for the 25.3 lb bag. When I first started using this food in 2010, it was barely $50. I can't argue with the results - my Sasha never had an issue with crystals/stones for the rest of her life. However, just like everything else, the price has skyrocketed. Soon, the average person won't be able to afford to feed a pet, especially if that pet has a health issue.

Jury’s still out

I have an EXTREMELY picky eater who needs to be on this diet. We have tried 2 different (before the royal canin) brands of kibble for her urinary tract issues and she turns her nose up to it. I can only surmise that these urinary tract formulas are just not as palatable, and perhaps this is just the nature of it. Don’t get me wrong, she eats it, just lacks enthusiasm at mealtime.

Dog, dry food urinary SO

A long history of utis, a couple encounters with crystals but no stones we tried Royal Canin this time and hoped to just remain on it since she won't eat science diet urinary. She cleared the crystals in a month and her oh went up to 6 (she has hx of low pH). Just opened the 2nd bag and after a couple of days she had abnormal panting/heavier breathing and wet the bed 2xs in 1 day (huge wet spots) even after being let out more due to increased thirst and output. She had no clue it was happening in her sleep. This is a 6yo lab that's well house trained. I immediately stopped the food (trying her 6th food to see if we can avoid utis that's not urinary food now). Almost 24hrs and she's slowly feeling better since discontinuing this. panting decreased noticably, she's not laying on her side struggling to get comfortable, and has more interest in her surroundings again so hopeful it didn't cause any permanent issues at least. -nothing like going from one extreme to the next!

Causes Urinary Incontinence (not just frequent urination)

I don’t write reviews, but this is worth sharing so it doesn’t happen to you. We started giving our Aussie this food due to crystals in her urine and kept her on it for a bit even after the crystals were gone (per our vet’s recommendation). All of a sudden our dog developed a UTI and started peeing herself in her sleep - she has never had issues with either previously - a very healthy senior dog. When the UTI was gone, she was still incontinent and come to find out it’s because of the Urinary SO food. Beware of feeding this to your dog long term.

Jury's Still Out

Trying to transition my dogs from Hill's Science Diet Urinary + Metabolic to Royal Canin Urinary SO. Both dogs did fine and like Royal Canin but have had trouble with regularity since changing. After 4 days of no go, it's time to see the Vet. Did NOT expect this. Cha-ching! Maybe the Metabolic contained something that stimulated their digestion? If so, even the Vet is unaware. So frustrating!!!

Top 1000 Contibutor

Only one complaint

My dog enjoyed this food, and it did its job of dissolving struvite crystals. However, I didn’t feel comfortable feeding this food long term as it is preserved with citric acid. When used as a preservative in dry food, citric acid increases the risk for GDV/bloat (Purdue University study). My dog is a Standard Poodle, so he’s already an at risk breed. We fed this food when we had to, but took him off of it after a month. He’s also battled frequent UTIs in addition to 2 instances of struvite crystals, so we are back on Royal Canin SO to see if it helps. The only difference is this time I’m feeding him the canned formula. Both the dry and canned formulas appear to work equally well, but the canned formulas also have the added bonus of providing him with more liquid in his diet which I’m sure helps a little more.
