On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Cat

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

  • Good diet so far..

    By on

I’m doing a food trial on my 4 year old kitty named Sirius because I have a suspicion that he’s allergic to chicken or fish (that’s what he ate mostly) he’s only been on it for about a week but his itchiness has gone down some since I switched. I would have given it 5 stars but the only downside to this food is IT STANKS. I know that certain diets have certain smells, but this food seriously stinks. I have to hold my breath when I open up his container. But he seems to love it, and he’s a very picky eater so I just deal with it.

  • Good product

My vet recommended different hard food as my cat has allergies. Chewy had it available and with a discount which was great as it is expensive. Ordered on line and it showed up at my door very quickly which was great as I needed to begin giving it to the cat right away. Everything worked great.

  • Miracle Cure!

    By on

My cat has gone through multiple foods with an assumed poultry allergy. Constantly vomiting around my house to the point where I just couldn't take it anymore. Was prescribed Ultamino by our Veterinarian. WINNER. I bit the bullet and paid the cost and its been worth it thus far. Significantly cut down on vomiting occasions.

  • Seems to work

    By on

My cat has been on this diet for only a couple weeks. We have noticed some vomit (probably from eating too fast, but not sure yet). His skin is clearer but his body always goes in cycles of scabbing then healing even without the elimination diet, so we are not convinced yet it is the diet. Chewy.com is AWESOME - I ordered on Friday and received it the next day!

  • Helped my Cat with IBS

    By on

After over a year of trial and error my new vet suggested this food. It’s been almost 5 months and she hasn’t vomited once. She’s gained 2 pounds. It is expensive but cheaper than the at least monthly visits to my vet.

  • Royal Canin Ultamino

    By on Top 500 Contributor

My vet recommended Royal Canin Ultamino as a food trial for my kitty with IBD. Tried twice to slowly introduce this food but she did not want to eat it. Normally Grace will try anything offered, but with Ultamino she would only try a few kibble and then stop eating. We are now offering a different veterinary diet that also has canned and she is eating that for the trial. I wish Royal Canin would offer vets trial samples of their foods as this food was very expensive, but my vet said they do not.

  • Food for allergy

    By on

Newly adopted cat has allergies; trying this food to eliminate/determine food allergy per vet guidance. Apparently is unique in world of special foods; does not have any soy per vet. Cat self switched to this from his old food (grain free single protein food.) Put both in bowl to slowly transition, but he chose to eat more of this and less of the other, so transition went fast. I like it better too; less greasy and smell nicer, almost sweet. Quality fine; price high as are all vet foods.

  • ALLERGY SOLUTION FOR MY CAT

    By on

After allergy tests and steroids & limited ingredient diet the vet suggested this Rx for my cat. It was the solution. So happy to find this! She was bald on her back from food allergies. Once she started this, fur grew back in beautifully and no issues no meds needed. She loves the food and it smells good. I did get her some of the RC Hydrolyzed protein treats for some variety & she loves them too. So happy to have found this solution.

  • Food so far - well liked

    By on

One of my cats has food sensitivities that caused her to loose her fur and come out in non-itchy bumps. Decided to give this a try. So far both of my cats like it. Unfortunately, Unltamino is not sold in Canada. I was very lucky that the border crossing let me bring the bag into Canada - seems pet food is one of the items not allowed in - except for immediate consumption and the pet has to be with you.

  • Seems to work for itchy skin

    By on

After trying the Royal Canin HP food, the vet recommended this formula. Seems to lessen the constant scratching and my picky eater and IBD kitty loves the food. The bag is small for this price but so far he has not eaten as much and still seems to be satisfied. Recommend for IBD kitties and those with allergies.
