FAQ

Why should I buy Vet Diet food online?

Shopping for Vet Diet food is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Vet Diet food?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Vet Diet food with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and type your vet’s name and telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Vet Diet team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my prescription?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your prescription, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax your prescription to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a prescription written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid prescriptions from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a prescription?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper prescription, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with your full name or the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps: 1. Create your pet ’s profile on Chewy.com. 2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on refills, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any prescription information has changed. 3. If you have a prescription handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do prescriptions expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your prescription will expire and how many refills we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up auto refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your food for as long as your prescription allows. If you run out of refills, or your prescription expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new approval. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Vet Diet team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

  • At least he eats it

    By on

This food has a strange texture and doesn't smell appealing but luckily this particular dog will eat anything. Good luck if you have a picky eater. My hopes are high that this will prevent future stones.

  • So far so good...

    By on

My 15 year old Shi Tzu's blood work showed a very high elevated liver number. My vet recommended putting her on this food. So far my sweet girl has enjoyed eating it: however, I do not know if it is making a difference with her elevated liver numbers since it's only been 1 1/2 weeks & she has not had new blood work. Hopefully, it'll bring her numbers down.

  • I love my food

    By on

Because I am almost 12, my vet changed my food to MATURE. I do not like being called old, so the word mature faked me out. I do not notice a change in taste or texture. My Mommy likes the convenience of Chewy.com.

  • is sandi likes it your dog will like it

    By on

We've had to switch Sandi's food twice in a year because she is facing different issues at her age of 11 years. She has been a Royal Canin dog since getting stones years ago. Every time we have switched her food it has continued to be a Royal Canin food. She eats the food without hesitation. This particular food has a horrible smell, thus the 4 stars.....

  • My dog does not like this particular formula.

    By on

I am writing this review just to let other pet owners know that although my dog seems to enjoy many varieties of canned dog food that I have purchased for him to try, he actually walks away from this specific formula. It is a little different than others both in texture (super soft, smooth pâté) and in scent. My dog does seem to approve of the Joint Care (j/d) formula by Hills Prescription Diet, and the Sensitive Stomach and Skin by Hills Science Diet, among others. I simply recommend keeping this in mind when trying this food for the first time, as it is a little pricey, and you may or may not have success and might need to seek a different option.

  • The Best !

    By on

Royal Canin Mature Consult Formula solved an eight yr old problem for us. Our blind, diabetic MaltiPoo has always been an extremely finicky eater - he ate this & loved it! We just sit & stare. I switched from another brand that has been bought by a company we no longer trust plus the other brand called a case 12 cans & Royal Canin calls a case 24 cans just as it should be & for basically the same price as the other. Royal Canin is not only the better food but also the best deal money-wise. We are sticking with Royal Canin. We've used the home delivery from Chewy for years now & we absolutely love that too.

  • Amazing!

    By on

Our little Doxy has always been a picky eater, I never knew she could love food the way she eats this food. What a blessing this food has been. I highly recommend this food for anyone looking to supplement their dog. Our Vet put her on this food to supplement her Liver. She is now 15 years old and going strong !!!!

  • Great food for a fussy Dachsie!

    By on

My 8-year-old miniature Dachsie had been eating the Royal Canin dry kibbles for her breed for over 7 years, but then she started getting fussy about eating it. After many frustrating attempts to "doctor it up", I tried this mature formula canned food based on the vet's recommendation. Well, my little Diva, Annie, LOVES it and never fusses over eating her food. In fact, she spins around in circles when she sees the can!!
