Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.
Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Cat
We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

Simon’s lovin it!
By Shelly on Feb 21, 2021
My biggest fear when I was told that my cat would need to eat this prescription venison food was that he wouldn’t eat it. He is a very picky eater. I shouldn’t have worried because Simon absolutely loves this food. He devours it. Thanks chewy for making a delicious prescription food that my cat loves. Can’t be easy with just three ingredients- venison, pea and soy, but you pulled it off! The only issue I have with the food is the price. It’s extremely expensive. It’s almost 80 for a case of 24 if I’m remembering right. Maybe it was 70 dollars, but that’s still way out of my budget. I figured out a way to get him started on the food because I want to see if it will make him feel better. The price may break the bank. I will keep doing my best to figure it out and make the sacrifices I need to try and keep him on this diet. Thanks chewy for being the wonderful, caring company that you are. … more

I would have appreciated a heads up that formulation and size had changed
By PamF on Feb 14, 2021
Since this is Chewy, who rocks, I am only taking off one star although it was quite surprising and upsetting to get my usual order only to find that both the size AND the formulation had changed. Not OK to not let people know beforehand. This isn't an off the shelf generic food: This is a prescription food item and so what is in it needs to be consistent. We pay a HUGE premium for this. This is among the most costly foods out there. Some clear note on the item page would have been appreciated. Also the size of the can has been reduced it by 10 percent while price remains the same. Not sure if they think buyers would not notice, but I personally would appreciate a simple price increase rather Since this is Chewy, who rocks, I am only taking off one star although it was quite surprising and upsetting to get my usual order only to find that both the size AND the formulation had changed. Finally a food my cat LOVES!
By Taizosmom on Jan 31, 2021
My vet suggested I try this when my recently adopted 7 year old cat seemed to have food allergies. Not only does it seem to have rendered him allergy free, but it's the first food he truly gobbles down (if I hold out the can he starts licking it immediately even before I spoon it out). It is more expensive but I was tossing out so much uneaten food before that it's worth it. My cat loves the loaf consistency (much to my surprise)...for those whose cats have problems with this just add a touch of warm water and mash it up...

Smaller can = more Cals
By techNomoly on Jan 4, 2021
I see a lot of people on here have wondered why they're paying the same amount for a smaller can. I implore you to read the nutritional content on both versions. Essentially what they've done is reduced the water and air content. They now call it a "loaf in sauce" and that describes it well. It's denser in the smaller can. It's only 7 calories different in the new size! For me, it makes much less mess when my cat is eating it. Before, she lost a good amount outside her dish by licking it off the side of the bowl. The old style crumbled as she ate it, now she's able to really get ahold of the chunks. I will probably be adding a little water back to supplement liquids, since that's one of the I see a lot of people on here have wondered why they're paying the same amount for a smaller can. Expensive but my cat’s gobbling is worth it!
By Catlover on Jan 5, 2021
My cat has been on Royal Canin Selected protein for almost 2 years. He was eating PV (Venison) and PR (Rabbit) but recently stopped liking PR. I re-ordered just a PV case and was surprised that the cost went up and the size of the cans went down by .5 ounces. But watching him gobble it down and then look up asking for more I felt it was worth it. Then when I checked back of the site I found out that this new case was a “special” formula and the old can of 5.6 oz. was still offered. Hope he continues to enjoy it.

Cat Just Won't Eat It
By 3Times on Jan 28, 2021
This is the 3rd specialty can cat food I have gotten, and she won't eat any of them. I try to mix it in with her regular food to work her over to the Royal Canin and I get to about 1/3 and she stops eating it totally. Now I have to find something else to try to help her and I'm stuck with over 3/4 of a pack. Definitely not worth it!

I don't like the cost, but they love the taste
By Cate on Jan 7, 2021
I'm not happy about paying more for less in this smaller can, but my cats absolutely love this stuff. That pleases me; I was concerned they'd have the opposite response to the different texture, becoming more finicky at greater expense. But even my pickier female -- never as big on canned food as her brother -- is all about this stuff. So I'll shut up and pull out the credit card. :)

Changed Formula and Size of Can But No Change in Price - My Cat Won't Eat It
By Henry on Jan 14, 2021
My 11 year kitty, who has eaten this food since he was a kitten, won't touch this new formula and his mom is upset because the amount of food has been decreased by 0.5 ounces and the price has not been changed. This new formula now contains a gel filler which my kitty won't eat and just walks away. So after 11 years, we now have to try to find a new prescribed food that he will eat. Plus the size of the can has been reduced by 0.5 ounces, which means that if my kitty would eat it, there are only 3 servings verses the 4 servings of the old larger can. In addition, there was NO REDUCTION IN PRICE. So you are paying more money for less food. Food allergies no more
By BringBackTheBigBoys on Dec 8, 2020
My cat has been solely eating this food and the dry food version of this item for almost a year. She was put on this diet due to a possible food allergy from a chicken protein. She switched over to this food no problem. It is the smelliest food I've ever encountered, but it certainly has helped clear up the scabs that were on my cat's back and her itchiness and irritation. While it hasn't completely solved her allergy problem, I definitely think this food has made a difference.

bad batches
By Haley on Nov 24, 2020
My cat loved this food for the longest time. However, this year there have been a few cases of this food that was so badly dented, the cans were already rancid. And I’ve had to throw away two cases worth of food because my cat wouldn’t eat it. I thought it was just us because I called Chewy and the actual company, and they said nobody else had complaints about the sudden change in quality of the food. I figured it might be a production error and tried to warn everyone. After reading a few reviews, I know know that the quality did change and my cat just knew better than to eat it.
