- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants
Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

Miraculous change AND she loves it!
By MizzW on Dec 19, 2020
Honestly, I was afraid to pay so much for food for a picky dog who never likes anything. However her allergies were so bad that I either had to invest in going to a specialist or we had to experiment with the new food as a part of a preliminary trial. I bought the dry food, which she also loved immediately. I honestly couldn’t believe it, but she still loves it! When I am obedient as her handler and mother, and keep her on just the food she doesn’t scratch she doesn’t have the symptoms that were so painful for me to watch. I have spoiled my dog so I do give her treats sometimes but when she starts scratching we go back to just the plain food and she’s fine.I even had someone tell me they could Honestly, I was afraid to pay so much for food for a picky dog who never likes anything. Life Saver!
By SCShopper on Dec 18, 2020
My dog got very ill with some kind of intestinal problem. The vet changed his food and gave him powdered probiotics. But it didn't work - he continued to lose weight (25% of his total weight lost). After bloodwork and x-rays to rule other problems out, the vet put him on the Royal Canin PR and a high-potency probiotic. It took him a few days to get used to the new food and then he started eating like normal again, and he is starting to gain some weight back. I am so very grateful, he is only 5 years old, and I was scared I would lose him. Thank heaven for this food!

they changed their ingredients
By susie on Nov 22, 2020
this isnt the original Royal Canine select protein, they quietly changed their ingredient list and added wood cellulose as one of the main ingredients, changing the fiber, protein and fat analysis alot. (increased protein 5.5 to 5.7, decreased fat 4.1 from 4.0, increased fiber 2.2 from 1.3) for those on RX diet only for the pets this is alarming. the original formula worked for my chronic gastritis dog and i used it for yrs, now im scrambling to find a replacement before my stash of old formula is used up. either way im changing supplier as this was beyond shady of them to do.

Wonderful food
By MRbuckley on Aug 19, 2020
Great product. My vet first told me to get prescription ID food, however to much fiber STILL for my pup. Then my vet then recommended this food which is only rabbit and pea. So far so good. My dog seems to love it. I give my pup a full can every day- morning and eve. His poops are prefect and he makes a lot of em’!

Dogs will love
By CarlieMom on Sep 5, 2020
Our dog is restricted to rabbit protien tight now, and the medication she is on has decreased her appetite. Mixing this wet rabbit protien food in with her dry rabbit protien food convinced her to eat again! I am very pleased.
