Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.
Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Cat
We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

Siamese Cat Loves!
By StephWonda on Nov 13, 2020
My Siamese baby is a picky eater especially when it comes to dry food. Not to mention, she has sensitivities and her tummy acts up every so often. Thanks to this VD dry food her diet is more controlled and better yet SHE EATS IT ON HER OWN, with or without additional topping. Highly satisfied:) both of us are #woopwoot

She loves it and asks for her meals! (This is our 3rd lg bag we’ve fed.)

Unfortunately my cat doesn’t like this product ...
By CatMom on Oct 10, 2020
At first she seemed to enjoy it; but by Day Two she sniffed it and walked away. To make matters worse, our vet decided that any type of fowl was contributing to her digestive sensitivity issues.

Good reviews, but neither of my cats will eat it :(
By Cougar on Jul 19, 2020
2 cats with IBD and/or food intolerances and neither will eat this food. It has good reviews, and both like the rabbit version, bus again sadly neither will eat it :(

The cats LOVE it!!
By Kelli on Feb 23, 2020
The cats had been eating a hydrolyzed protein diet for a couple of years after one of them developed food allergies. They both ate it and it a seemed to like it but I felt like they were missing out on something. At my request the vet approved a trial of the Select protein diet, and it has been a huge success!! No adverse reactions, both of their coats look and feel better...but most importantly they LOVE it! I would highly recommend giving it a try...your kitties will thank you.

Lifesaver, literally
By Poodletiff1 on Jan 7, 2020
My sphynx was hospitalized for a week 3 years ago due to pancreatitis, gastritis, and internal bleeding due to unknown cause. While she was there they tried everything to get her to eat, and offered her several different foods. This was one of them. Not only did she eat it, she flourished. For 8 years she had loose poops and after trying every type of food I could think of I just assumed it was something we would never figure out. She must have had a sensitivity to something because this food not only saved her life at the hospital but changed her whole digestive system. She has had beautiful formed stools ever since. I’m so thankful!

Service tried
By Penelope on Feb 11, 2020
Customer service rep really tried to get the Vet approval. Some glitches, not sure where, in getting fax to right person in timely fashion. All well in end but took more days than expected. Cat accepted and ate new dry food.

He will not eat it.
By Petmommy on Nov 9, 2019
Our dry food eater left the bowl of kibble without even a taste. Obviously the smell didn't appeal to him. I kept the full bowl out for over a week, but finally gave in and gave him the Royal Canin Hairball formula that he loves. The almost full bag is going to our local cat rescue. Hope one of their kitties will enjoy it.

Sure helped my cat!
By CatLover on Oct 28, 2019
One of our cats was having a mysterious condition, with weight loss, frequent vomiting and itchy skin bumps around the tail area of her back. Before we were about to dive into expensive further testing, a friend recommended that we try this diet change. It was worth a try!! All symptoms have disappeared. Her weight is up to normal, and she loves this food. We are all happy!

Great if you're willing to spend $100 on food.
By Zubie on Oct 2, 2019
I bought this food as a recommendation from my vet. My vet believes that my cat has protein allergies which are causing her to scratch her face until it bleeds. I tried this and the wet version, but my cat wouldn't eat the wet food and I couldn't return it because it's prescription. After months of feeding my cat this food, I decided to do some research to find if there is any "over the counter" food that has the same/similar ingredients that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. I came to find that Blue Buffalo Limited Ingredient Formula, Duck Flavor, practically has the same exact ingredients and doesn't have any of the proteins or corn which my cat may be allergic to at a third of the price.
