FAQ

Why should I buy Vet Diet food online?

Shopping for Vet Diet food is easy! Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer your questions and guide you through the process. We offer competitive prices, free shipping on orders over $49, and more savings if you sign up for an Autoship subscription.

How do I order Vet Diet food?

  1. Search our website for the diet your vet recommends, then add it to your cart. You can purchase your Vet Diet food with any other goodies you need!
  2. At checkout, you’ll be asked for required information. Enter your pet’s name and type your vet’s name and telephone number.
  3. Place your order, and we’ll take care of the rest!

How will you contact my vet?

Our Vet Diet team will personally contact your vet for approval. If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we’ll let you know immediately.

Does it help if I send you my prescription?

Yes! If you have a paper copy of your prescription, email a picture to vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat, or fax your prescription to 1-800-619-7973.

Can I use a prescription written by a veterinarian out of state?

Of course! We can accept valid prescriptions from anywhere in the United States and Canada—that includes US territories, like Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a prescription?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. If you don’t have a paper prescription, no sweat—once you provide your vet’s information, our team will take over.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we’ll need them to provide us with your full name or the pet’s owner’s name via phone, email or chat after the order is placed, so the clinic can locate your pet’s records when we contact them.

How can I help expedite my order?

Just follow these simple steps: 1. Create your pet ’s profile on Chewy.com. 2. If you have an Autoship scheduled, but you’re running low on refills, contact us ahead of time to let us know if you have a new clinic or if any prescription information has changed. 3. If you have a prescription handy, send it to us before you order—by sending an email to vetdiet@chewy.com, starting a chat with one of our experts, or faxing us at 1-800-619-7973.

Do I need to set up a pet profile?

We recommend it, but it’s not required. You can create your pet’s profile by logging in at Chewy.com, hovering over your account, and choosing “pet profile.”

Do prescriptions expire?

Yes. Your vet will tell us when your prescription will expire and how many refills we can send before they’d like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up auto refills?

Yep! Sign up for Autoship and we’ll automatically ship your food for as long as your prescription allows. If you run out of refills, or your prescription expires, we’ll automatically contact your vet for a new approval. If we hit any bumps in the road, we’ll let you know right away.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the Vet Diet team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We’re here for you 24/7.

Another one my kitties don’t like

    By on

I hate to rate the product a one star, but again, my picky cats do not like the food. We’re in a trail by error process to find the best prescription food for their food allergies (basically everything under the sun). I really like the Royal Canin brand, but we’ve been through them all expect one because it does not come with an accompanying wet version. I called chewy and again they totally understood and gave a refund. This time though I have to send the food back to them unlike other times. I guess they don’t trust me anymore since we’re in a trail be error process...

    Makes Your Cat Louder

    By on

Purchased this food at the recommendation of our vet to ease face scratching and allergies. One unexpected side effect has been that it has increased the volume of our cat's meows. Her meows incerased by a magnitude of 8, and grow louder as we reach for her food cup. Glad to say she seems otherwise healthy. So far, I would recommend this as an option; I also recommend ear plugs.

Royal Canin PV is back! (And as expensive as ever...)

    By on

I have one cat with digestive issues and his stool was a mess until I put him on the Royal Canin PV formula. However, this variety was unavailable for quite a while and neither of my two cats was crazy about the duck or the rabbit protein source; I am glad the venison is back. It has a pleasant smell and the RC cat kibbles are well-shaped. The re-sealable bag top is rubbish, however, and I have complained to the company about it to no avail; it doesn't close well and considering the exorbitant cost of this food, they could make it a tad more re-sealable/sturdy. I also wish they would offer the venison in a larger, less expensive bag, as they do with the duck variety. My finicky eater loves this food!

    By on

I was nervous when my vet suggested putting our 11 year old female on a prescription diet because she is very picky and with the cost I was afraid she would turn her nose up at it. It was quite the opposite. I have never seen her be so excited for dry food in her entire life. Just opening the bag gets her attention!

No allergic reaction from this food!

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

One of my cats has food allergies and I've tried so many different foods over the years but never found one that didn't cause an allergic reaction. He always had leaky eyes after eating. Worse some foods made him vomit and some made him lick his fur until he has bald spots. This food was recommended by a Holistic Veterinarian who is also a DVM and I was pleasantly surprised that he eats this as well as the wet version with no side effects. In fact my other three cats like the dry version as well.

    Tasty Dry Food

    By on

Leo absolutely loves this dry food. Wasn't too crazy about his other food. This is prescription food so wasn't sure how he would take to it. But seems to love it.

    Great Product

    By on

I have to feed my cat prescription food because of an allergy to chicken, which is found in some form in most cat food products. I have found the Royal Canin products I am using now and those I have used in the past to be excellent, both in terms of the ingredients and palatability.
