FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About Royal Canin Veterinary Diets - Dermatological Line

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

Great food, but constant dented cans

    By on

My dog does great on this food (helps high liver and pancreas enzymes in 15 year old Cushings patient, but still going strong!) and I think it's a good value for money even though it's expensive. What I don't love is that when I order the cans, I am spending about $100 for a pack of 24 and usually over half of them are badly dented. I'm not talking a little tiny dent here and there....I'm talking about cans that look like crushed empty beer cans. Sometimes they are leaking, most often not. These are not damaged in transit. I am sure they are damaged at the vendor level (dented cans are always on the middle row and never facing outward.) Chewy is great about refunds for damaged cans, but it is My dog does great on this food (helps high liver and pancreas enzymes in 15 year old Cushings patient, but still going strong!) and I think it's a good value for money even though it's expensive. I love Chewy and their customer service, but ordering a high end food and knowing that most of the time half will be unusable is really unacceptable. … more

Excellent product for an English Bulldog with poultry allergies

    By on

My 2.5-years old English bulldog is a picky eater and also has bad allergies to anything poultry, even traces of chicken stock and fat. The combo of canned Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Selected Protein Adult PW Canned Dog Food and the same dry food is working wonders. He is not chewing his paws (or significantly less), does not itch, and LOVES the taste of both. He was on the KO (Kangaroo) diet before but it was discontinued and we had to find the alternative. This one works better than KO. I hope Royal Canin does not discontinue this diet.

    Several dented cans

    By on

I do always appreciate your timely deliveries even in spite of the current situation. My only concern is there are several cans in this package, and not just on the ends, that have been dented to varying degrees. As a veterinarian, this always makes me worry about the quality of the product and how it is stored.

Probably an excellent option for other dogs

    By on

My dogs would not touch this particular fish variety of RC wet food. They do enjoy the venison formula.

My German Sheppard loves this dog food and has always been a very picky eater. You might know, the one that works best for her, is so expensive.

    Great for sensitive tummies

    By on

So far this food is working well for my dog with IBD, pancreatitis, SIBO, and acid reflux! He loves the taste as well, I wasn’t sure if he would since it is fish but so far no issues!

    My picky dog actually eats!!

    By on

My dog, who has a long list of GI issues, anxiety, IBD, you name it, actually eats this food! He has been on the fish diet for about 1 month. He’s not always jumping for it, but he will eventually eat it and clear his bowl, almost every time! — huge upgrade in this house. His stools are much better, although they seemed to be better with the PR food, however he didn’t like the taste as much as the fish. Hopefully this is a keeper!
