Cystine stones (uroliths) occur when an inherited defect of the kidneys causes a build up of cystine in the dog’s urine. Cystine is an amino acid that is filtered and reabsorbed by the kidneys. The build up of this amino acid in the urine leads to the formation of cystine stones. Certain breeds are more affected than others by cystine urolithiasis. These include English Bulldogs, Newfoundlands, Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and Mastiffs. Mixed breed dogs with the ancestry of these genetically susceptible breeds can also be affected.

Key Benefits

  • This is second time ordering and dog will eat it now.

    By on

First time we ordered this food last year I dog went 4 days without eating. Would not touch it. We had to pay Cornell University Animal Hospital to make a diet for our dog that we had to cook 3 times a day. This time we had to go out of town for more then 9 days and no area kennel or animal hospital boarding would cook the food the last 2 days(we could bring meals we made for the first 7 days for them to feed him). We had to order this food for him to eat. Now or English Mastiff eats this food daily with no problem at all. I'm so greatful for CHEWY.com and their WONDERFUL customer service! We are now on automatic ship for his food.

  • Thankful for this product!

    By on

My dog was put on this food by our Veterinarian, after having emergency surgery to remove stones that were blocking his ability to urinate. After sending the stones in to be tested, they were found to be a special type of stone that most mixed breed dogs are prone to. After starting him on this food, he has had no issues! This food really saved my best friend.

This dog food keeps my dog alive. He had really bad kidney stones that blocked his urine. After the operation several years ago he has had no recurrence.

  • Low Purine Dog Food

    By on

I recently adopted a 5 year old male Dalmatian. Knowing Dals are prone to bladder stones, I had his urine checked and found out he had crystals in his urine. After a bladder ultrasound which came back negative for any stones, my vet recommended this low purine diet to help prevent any stones from forming. I had another male before, that also had a history of stones, so I was familiar with the protocol. My Dal just loves the food, he eats it all up.

  • Amazing Product

    By on

My dog has urate stones and recently had to have surgery to get them removed. We tried other prescription dog foods but every meal time became a battle trying to get him to eat. I started looking for other prescription foods and found this amazing food. My dog loves it! In fact if I'm late feeding him he'll pester me just to make sure I remember that it's meal time. I definitely recommend this to anyone who needs this kind of prescription dog food.

I have 2 mini schnauzers, one had 7 bladder stones removed when he was only 2.5 yeras old so our vet put him on Science Diet UC but he would balk at eating it so we tried the Royal Canin and he eats it just fine.
