Description

Lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) refers to a group of disorders that commonly leads to irritation of the urinary tract and corresponding undesirable clinical signs.

What causes Lower Urinary Tract Disease? In dogs, bacterial infections of the urinary tract and the presence of stones (uroliths) in the urinary tract are the most common causes. This diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.

Key Benefits

  • Canine Urinary SO Moderate Calorie is a complete and balanced diet for adult dogs predisposed to weight gain. It is formulated to aid in the nutritional management of calcium oxalate and struvite urolithiasis.
  • Moderate calorie content, compared to canine Urinary SO, to help maintain ideal weight.
  • Royal Canin Urinary SO Index® promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals
  • Increasing the urine volume simultaneously reduces the saturation of urine with calcium oxalate and struvite crystals
  • Relative Super Saturation (RSS) methodology predicts the crystallization potential of urine; RSS is used to develop diets that lower the concentration of ions contributing to struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis.

Transition Instructions

We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

  • I was skeptical at first, but it's helped a lot

I wasn't so sure I wanted to feed my dog this food based on some things I had read regarding the ingredients. However, since I have put her on it, she has gotten extremely better with her urination issues. She had a pretty bad infection where she passed rather large stones and was on two rounds of clavemoxx along with switching to this food. She is still having a little leaking here and there (vet said there could be a few things, and just monitor it and come back for a followup) but no more stones, no blood in her urine and she urinates less frequently. She has been off the antibiotics for a while now and the food is helping maintain her bladder health along with the fact that her tear stains I wasn't so sure I wanted to feed my dog this food based on some things I had read regarding the ingredients. A lot of people are concerned about their pet gaining weight on it, but she has actually lost 2 pounds. We are on a pretty strict diet of no people food and only medicated dog food or treats, so her caloric intake has probably come down. It does have a pretty potent smell to it, but you get used to that. … more

  • No more crystals

    By on

Our poodle mix developed crystals in his urine which put him at risk for kidney stones. Our vet recommended we switch to help with this issue. He no longer has crystals and he has never had a kidney stone. I will warn you that the product itself is meant to make them thirsty in order to encourage them to drink more water...so I mix his with a little bit of water and make sure he always has a full bowl of water available. We also have him on the moderate calorie version because the regular made him gain a few extra pounds.

  • Lower calorie prescription diet

    By on

still not happy that my little 5 pound Pom has to be on an S/O diet but this diet works. we have tested her on the diet and off. She has crystals in her urine whenever she is off the diet. I am thrilled it comes in a moderate calorie because she was gaining a lot of weight on the regular S/O diet. My vet allows some variation of diet every other day but i hate to admit it this diet really does take the crystals away. I test her every 3 months. Great product and good deal on the price

  • Prescription food

    By on

Our dog Samus was given a prescription for this food due to a massive stone in her bladder. I bought the first bag of it at our local Petsmart for $70. After doing some research I was happy to find it on Chewy for less than $50 with the auto shipping option. I have it set up to receive a new bag every 6 weeks so I will never run out. She will be getting an Xray at the end of the month to see if the food is helping to shrink the stone but so far all of her symptoms have gone away!

  • Love this food!

    By on

Annie eats this food everyday and loves it. She never gets tired of eating the same food. She likes it best with fresh cooked chicken pieces added. Her auto shipment is reliable and relieves everyone of worry that she might run out of food. She also likes the canned version and wishes she could add 3 or 4 cans to her auto order each month because she does not eat the canned food as often. We love shopping at Chewy!!!

  • great customer Service

    By on

this food is cheaper on Chewy than other sites. it shipped quickly and was delivered within two days of ordering. My dog likes the food as long as there is canned food mixed in with the dry. It was easy to order and all i had to do was fax a copy of the prescription. Chewy will contact your vet if you don't have the prescription handy.

I figured the process would be lengthy and annoying getting the vet to sign off on the script. But it was so easy. Only tookn2 days from starting to recieving the food at my door, and was 3x more food very pleased

  • TRANSITION TO URINARY SO

    By on

I don't know yet if the product is working, but I do know that he is drinking more water. I would think that would be a good thing. We are in the transition phase and he will be using this product for 6 months and then retested. Hopefully, at that time I can do another review based on usage.

  • Tiny kibble for a tiny Yorkie

    By on

She suffers from bladder stones. The other prescription Urinary diet she was on had kibble that were too big for her to handle. She really likes the Royal Canin. If it keeps the bladder stones from returning, she will be a life long customer.
