How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

New vet prescribed diet for my dog
By LoMaTay on Feb 28, 2021
My vet prescribed the Royal Canin Urinary SO Moderate Calorie dog food for my dog who was having urinary issues. I mix the dry dog food in with the Royal Canin Urinary SO Moderate Calorie canned and she loves it. I was concerned about changing to a new canned and dry food since she has been eating another brand for quite some time but she loves it. She likes the new food so well she doesn't seem to miss her treats ("yum-yums") that she can no longer have while on this food. I would highly recommend this food for dogs who are having urinary issues.

Mikey Likes It!
By Mikey on Feb 22, 2021
So does my GSD. He is a picky eater but he loves this stuff. It is designed to keep his urinary track and bladder stone free for the Struvite stones. He recently went through a bad patch and could not pass a stone through the bone in his penis that the urethra passes through. That was an expensive pet bill. The alternative is a specifically designed dog food to minimize the issue. It is worth the money!

IN Stock! & excellent customer service
By AGdoggiemom on Feb 2, 2021
This is a prescription diet ordered by my vet so its necessary and it was out of stock again on our vets food ordering webb site. I was worried and running low on the food when to my surprise it was available on Chewy! I ordered two bags which were delivered within the week. It was a few dollars more on Chewy but the peace of mind was priceless. I had a little trouble setting up my account online but the phone customer service rep was excellent and walked me through to completion.

Ack! Prescription food not available thru my vet any more!
By Nodin on Feb 23, 2021
We have the sweetest little Sheltie who has to eat a prescription diet for kidneys and our local vet (in a small, remote town) stopped carrying it. I was a bit worried about whether or not we would be able to find it but Chewy came thru, helped get it authorized and sent right away. Absolutely recommend always!

Prescribed by Vet
By Mary on Jan 20, 2021
I am sure that this food is doing its job as it was prescribed by the vet after Queenie had her surgery. My dog has not had any issues with her health concern since we starting using this food. I think it smells like medicine, though, and I think my dog does too. It take a lot of coaxing or that she is really really hungry before she eats it. Hi, Royal Canin, can you make this food smell more like steak? No digs to Chewy, its not your problem. We do love Chewy!

Jury's still out
By ssj205 on Jan 27, 2021
Are only serving this food as half of each meal right now to transition to it full-time. Was recommended by vet after she saw evidence of crystal's starting to form in dog's urine (or was it his bladder). So trying this food for a couple months, to then have him retest and see if crystals are gone. So jury's still out. I will say this food is very stinky! But so far dog's digesting it and has no issues eating it.

This food has been great for my dog!!
By Bobbie on Feb 2, 2021
My dog Abby had surgery a year ago for a bladder stone. Her vet prescribed her this food and wow what a difference! We haven’t had any issues and my sweet ten year old girl has her spunk back. I highly recommend to any pet owner looking for a urinating food for their dogs.

Royal Canin
By MLOU on Jan 12, 2021
I bought this dog food as I have a female Pekingese that had bladder stones a couple of years ago, and is now eating this as a prescription. It has worked very well for her, and she’s had no more issues. I normally order from my vet, but their source had a backlog with manufacturer. I was able to order through Chewy and had it within a couple of days. I highly recommend!!

I love the choices and service I get from chew, but I have A very hard time picking up the boxes once delivered. Maybe you should consider cut out handles on your boxes. Would be a great improvement for your customers.

Smooth Transition
By Samoyedlover on Feb 28, 2021
I have just transitioned my 12-year old Samoyed to this food. He seems more satisfied, and I am pleased that it will benefit him in his senior years. This was a good move for him!
