Description

Lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) refers to a group of disorders that commonly leads to irritation of the urinary tract and corresponding undesirable clinical signs.

What causes Lower Urinary Tract Disease? In dogs, bacterial infections of the urinary tract and the presence of stones (uroliths) in the urinary tract are the most common causes. This diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals.

Key Benefits

  • Canine Urinary SO is a complete and balanced diet for adult dogs formulated to aid in the nutritional management of calcium oxalate and struvite urolithiasis.
  • Reduced magnesium level supports urinary health
  • Royal Canin Urinary SO Index® promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals
  • Relative Super Saturation (RSS) methodology predicts the crystallization potential of urine; RSS is used to develop diets that lower the concentration of ions contributing to struvite and calcium oxalate urolithiasis
  • Increasing the urine volume simultaneously reduces the saturation of urine with calcium oxalate and struvite crystals

Feeding Instructions

Transition Instructions

We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Royal Canin diets preserved?

All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process.

Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?

We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.

Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?

Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?

Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients.

How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?

Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.

  • We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.
  • We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.
  • We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.
  • We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.

How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?

Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.

If your pet is experiencing health issues, please refer to your veterinarian for more information. Your veterinarian will consider multiple factors when recommending an appropriate diet.

I got this food for my dog after getting a prescription from the vet. She had a uti and they recommended she eat this food for a month to see how she does on combo with antibiotics. I feed my cat the feline urinary so and have been for almost four years after he developed urinary crystals, and he's done well on it. This food is pricey, but it's worth it if your pet has urinary issues because it really works provided you follow your vets instructions to feed them ONLY this food. They make treats as well. Anything else will disrupt the pH balance of their urine that this food aims to control. Chewy is amazing because they have the best price I've found for this food in the four years I've been purchasing. They have very fast shipping and discounts for autoship. I was able to email the prescription for both pets to expedite the approval for chewy to ship this item. I recommend buying this food from chewy to anyone I know who feeds this to their pet. … more

  • Great Food

    By on

The food shipped quickly, within a day, which was surprising because the prescription had to be verified before it could be shipped. My dog was put in this food because of a bladder infection, and I was surprised how much a small bag cost at the pet store. I checked on Chewy.com to see if they carried it, although I was doubtful because I wasn't sure they'd carry prescription food. To my surprise, and delight, they did! And it was significantly cheaper than it cost me at the pet store. As far as the food itself, my dog loves it and she makes sure she doesn't leave a single bite in her bowl. • Good quality, more affordable than anywhere else

    By on

After my English Mastiff (who is only 1 1/2 years old) had a severe case of calcium oxalate stones. Which lead to a extremely invasive surgery. He was put on this o/s food to help prevent more stones from developing. We were told he would have to be on it for the rest of his life. To purchase this food (which is prescription food) it is quite costly. Luckily, I have been buying all of my pet products through Chewy for some time now. The food is still pricey, but I do get more for my money. Every cent that I can save helps!

  • Vet Prescribed

    By on

Our 15 year old lab/retriever mix was prescribed this food by his vet to treat bladder stones. The food was much more expensive from the vet than from Chewy. Since a prescription is required to purchase this food, Chewy's order form requested name/phone # of vet. I received an email less than 1 hour after placing the order that my order will be shipping. Thanks Chewy for excellent service.

  • Right diet wrong stones

    By on

Difficult to rate the diet as the reason for getting it was to dissolve bladder stones. My vet suggested we try it before surgery. We fed it to our bichon exclusively for one month and it did not dissolve the stones. The dog did however love the kibble and wet food and treats. He seemed to like them better than what he had been eating. We had the stones surgically removed and he is now off of the Royal Canin Urinalysis SD food.

  • Works great, smells horrible

    By on

My Ham was diagnosed with struvite crystals and his vet put him on this food. At first he loved it. Then he hated it and I had to mix it with the canned version. Now he loves the dry again. At his latest checkup Ham was crystal free. The only real downside is the smell.

  • Dogs LOVE it TOO MUCH!!!

    By on

I had one of my 3 dogs put on this by their vet and all of them won't stay out of it. I asked the vet if it is ok for dogs that don't have urinary issues (struvite crystals) and she said yes its ok, but it's going to be expensive. It is a cost I may just deal with since they all seem to like it a lot and it encourages lots of drinking and in turn healthy urination. I have had to add another "outside" time to their schedule. The bites are small and work for all of my dogs ranging from 5lb-55lb. So far so good.

  • Crystals in urine no more

    By on

My 14 yr old female lab developed crystals in her urine. Had the test done twice. My vet put her in this food for a month and she was tested again. No more crystals. My girl gobbles this food up. It was much cheaper here than what my vet charged me.

  • Helps so much!

    By on

This food really helps her urinary issues, however, I wish I could get the low-calorie in a bigger bag. She is gaining weight very fast on this food. I'm having to add veggies in it so that I can cut her portions back a bit.

  • Senior dog & food

    By on

My 11 yr. old labrador just got diagnosed with urinary stones and this food has been helping her and getting those stones to go away. The delivery was super fast and I love that it comes straight to my house! Not only that, but it saves me money/time since I can only get it at the vet otherwise.
