Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Great food for fussy cats!

    By on

I was very pleased with how much my cats seem to enjoy this "diet" food. As an added bonus, after a bag of this food, both of their coats (which are very different) are glossy and super healthy.

    Fantastic food!

    By on

I 100% recommend this food! My health compromised cat contracted some kind of virus and refused to eat anything. After a couple trips to the vet, an appetite booster, and fluids, we tried to give him his regular food and he still wouldn’t eat it. The vet had a sample of this food, and my cat gobbled it up! It’s easier for him to chew up, and it was easier on his tummy after being sick.

Weight Contro Formula Dry Cat Food - Royal Canin

    By on

I bought this for 2 of my 3 chubby Mews. Only 1 likes it, so I won't buy it again. It LOOKS and SMELLS very bland...I don't know, but you know how cats are...very picky.

    Hercules Approves

    By on

My cat was diagnosed with bladder stones and now is required to eat food with the s/o index label. He is also a bit chubby so our vet recommended this dry cat food. Hercules absolutely loves it! It keeps his bladder healthy and his tummy happy. He actually loves it so much I’m not sure he is losing weight.

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Weight Control Formula Dry Cat Food

I think this food it terrific. I mix it with Royal Canin Satiety Dry Cat food for a total of 3/4 cup & feed it to my Big Guy 3 times a day with 1/2 a 3oz can of wet Beyond cat food twice a day. Hope that made sense because it is the magic combo for satiety, satisfaction and weight loss for my overweight by 6 - 8 pounds, a 20+ pound beautiful Tabby named Callie Boy. He's been on this strict diet now for 10 days and this morning I was just thrilled to find that his collar was significantly loose and he even looks trimmer too. For 2 years I have been trying to come up with a weight loss strategy for Callie Boy who just turned 4 and has been overweight now since he was 2 years old. I failed I think this food it terrific. I failed every time and was getting really frustrated and afraid that he would never lose. I was very worried about his health & quality of life so without any help from my vet I started to research what Chewy.com had to offer. I've been shopping with Chewy for a little over a year now so I hoped they had something that would work and they definitely did. I found these Royal Canin Dry Cat Food varieties that require a prescription from your vet. I compared them to Hills Science diet that I was using and these Royal Canin had wonderfully good features like a Satiety variety and Extra Vitamins & extra fiber and much lower calories than all the other so called diet food I found. So I took a chance, ordered 2 varieties, this one that I'm now reviewing and the Satiety variety because my boy was constantly hungry. And they have worked! The Royal Canin all have much fewer calories for the same serving size which was what I was looking for. They are also more expensive but well worth the extra money because they actually work. Callie Boy gained on all the other foods and now he's finally losing. I thought he never would lose the weight and it just scared me for him. So I recommend this Royal Canin food to anyone with a significantly overweight kitty that wants some results and mine came pretty darn fast too. … more

    Not working for my cat

My cat weighs 17 pounds and needs to lose at least three. I diligently measure his food intake every day. He likes this food but has yet to lose one ounce.
