Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |
Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?
We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.
How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Royal Canin Diet Food
By Coco on Jan 4, 2021
My cat just wouldn't even touch this. If he got hungry enough he'd nibble at it, but it took all day. So I don't recommend it, plus I thought it was just chicken , but it has liver in it and he just doesn't like it, so I'm just going back to fancy feast which I know he'll eat. He only gets 3 oz twice a day and he finishes it all. Swim stuck with this now until I can donate it and I've got a whole box, only used 1 can....just sucks.

no good any more
By gail on Jan 2, 2021
My cats won't eat this cat food any more and I think the manufacturer has discontinued it. It is just too dry I think. It happened once before just for one case, but now it has been true for three cases.

Good food that works
By Maria on Sep 3, 2020
Two of my cats are overweight, according to their vet. This food has given them what they need (plenty of it in the can) and they seem to be satisfied. The food smells great, plenty of it, and the cats devour it.

Good replacement for RC Calorie Control
By Arwen on May 18, 2020
When Royal Canin discontinued the prescription Calorie Control food, I searched for another general weight control food for my three cats with various needs that they would all like. I tried another company's product which they liked at first, but after 1 and a half cases, they won't touch it anymore. So I searched again and found RC Weight Control. They all love it. It looks just like the old Calorie Control (a pate, or paste), and they gobble it down like before, so I assume it smells and tastes the same or better to them. I am only halfway through one case, so I hope they don't get fickle and stop eating it!

Very Stinky
By CharlotteNY on Feb 7, 2020
If you’re pregnant like me or have a sensitive nose I would have to recommend steering clear of this food. Got it because it was the most affordable prescription weight control food and the cat will eat it and his stomach is fine, but he is a brick and will do that with anything. This is probably the smelliest pet food I have ever had the displeasure of handling. I had to have my husband do the feeding because I couldn’t handle it.

The TASTE ?
By Presley on Jan 13, 2020
Not sure if my cat that needs weight loss is enjoying this product. He sniffed it several times before he tried it and then only ate a few bites. Not a good sign when he normally gobbles everything down hence, gains weight quickly. It is too expensive for him to be picky so I will keep trying and if it doesn't suit him then no, I won't repeat the order.

More of a paste than a pate....
By RexsMom on Feb 6, 2019
It was more processed than I thought it would be but he liked it just fine. (And anything that keeps him from trying to steal my other cats' food works for me.)
