Daily feeding recommendations may be divided into 2 - 4 meals.
We recommend at least a 7-day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants
Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.
Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Dog
We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

We have been on this for about 3 weeks. It was a tough transition from chicken and rice. My Miniature Schnauzer has had loose stools for the 4 years I have had her..she is 10. In the past month she is either throwing up, constipated or having mushy to very loose stools. Extensive blood work shows nothing...most likely gastrointestinal issues, brought on by food or intolerance issues. My vet recommended this. She is better, not consistently, but she is full of energy and seems to be her happy self. I am using both canned and kibble versions mixed. My seven year old schnoodle has had allergies all her young life. After relocating we were advised to try Royal Canin Veterinary Diet. After two weeks amazing difference! My 18 1/2 year old dachshund has been on this food for years (after having a bout of bladder stones awhile back). We had tried other dog foods which were supposed to prevent stones from recurring, but they weren't hypoallergenic and she suffered from consistent ear infections. This food is the best of both worlds!!

I am so happy with this food for my picky dogs. When we found that we needed to change from another prescription dog food because it wasn't agreeing with my Shih tzu, I dreaded trying this, but just as the doctor said, he loved it. Thank you to Chewy for your quick service and superb communication throughout!

My purchase required an RX. The price was the best I found. The vet and the local stores were more expensive. After many different foods, this HP dog food seems to be the one that works best for my dog.

The allergy specialist put her on this along with the wet food. Her and her brother are eating it. It seems to be helping but they prefer the wet food. I mix the wet food with the dry and they will eat it although they try to wait me out to see if I'll give them something better.

My little dog had such bad food allergies, she lost all her hair. She lost so much hair she looked Iike a lion. It was awful. Finally, after testing and putting her on THIS FOOD, she was good as new! She is back to herself! Food allergies never even dawned on me...

At every vet visit my Cooper is told he needs to drop a few pounds. I am very particular about what goes into my furkids bodies. I look at every ingredient. Cooper has a poultry allergy. His skin gets really itchy. I had been giving them Organix Grain-Free Poultry-free Salmon-based dry food, really good food, so I was sure he just needed more exercise. Every vet visit the scale was either rising or not budging. I couldn't figure it out. Finally my vet put them on this HP food, especially formulated for allergy-prone dogs. I just went to the vet today and Cooper has lost 3 pounds! Which is a big progress for a small Yorkie/Maltese mix. I guess it was the food choice all along. I learned that just because a food has good ingredients, doesn't mean it digests well for every dog. The food I was giving them was quality, but high-calorie. This special HP food is lower calorie but still rich in quality. They love the taste too, so we are all happy :) I gave it 4 stars only because I wish it wasn't so expensive. My other food was expensive too, but I got more food for the money. ($64 for a 25 lb bag vs this $35 for an 8 lb bag). … more
