About Royal Canin Veterinary Diets - Dermatological Line

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

  • So glad we tried this!

    By on

Our 3 year old English Springer Spaniel was prescribed an elimination diet for severe allergies. She absolutely refused the Purina dog food given to us by the vet. I did a little research and with my vet’s OK ordered this. She LOVES IT and is doing great. We use the canned to give her meds and the treats are great too. Highly recommend and she’s doing much better!

I gave 2 stars because my other dogs/cats love other products from royal canin. Thought I’d try it for my dog that has food allergies but he refused to eat it.

  • Prescription for food?

    By on

After having this type of food recommended by my vet, a cursory Google search shows that a number of states are suing companies who require prescriptions for food- it should either be medicine OR food. By having this "requirement" the cost of this food can be $100 for a small bag. As a pet parent with a pet struggling with a medical issue, of course I purchase it- but the cost is VERY prohibitive and may cause a host of other medical issues beyond the original issue. Food is not the same a prescription medication. Where is the federal over site?

  • Resolved Digestive Inflamation

    By on

Within a full digestive cycle, noticed positive changes - back to normal stool and no more inflammation under the tail or belly. Have been using a different brand prescription diet with hydrolysed protein plus apoquel with good results the last 4 years until the last couple months ago - the stool became too soft as inflammation returned. This Royal Canin recipie has no animal meat which appears to have solved the problem. The dog loves it.

This product was recommended to me by my veterinarian and has been really helpful for my dog's stomach and digestive issues. She was really gassy and having issues with vomiting and diarrhea. I highly recommend if your dog is having similar problems, she has really improved. Talk to your vet about getting this food. This is the best value in hydrolyzed protein dog food that I have found! Chewy is the best! Thank you!
