About Royal Canin Veterinary Diets - Dermatological Line

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

Find the Right Royal Canin Diet for Your Cat

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

  • Our Burmese love it, Bengal not so much

    By on

Our vet prescribed and sold our first expensive bag of this to my son when he took our 12YO Bengal in for being barfy kitty. She was only OK with it but our Burmese (American Traditional) went nuts over it. We had a litter of 4 Burmese kitties and they started to grab it as soon as they got teeth. We had to feed the kitties in their playpen so they’d at least get kitten food before running over to crunch on this food. It sits well, we have never seen it come back up. Only problem is, it’s Rx (boo) but when we ran out of the bag from the vet, I didn’t get an argument out of our vet when I asked for a prescription on paper so I could order from Chewy’s for $10 less.

  • IRRITABLE BOWEL IN MR. CAT

    By on

So, after $1500 in vet bills and it turns out the bouts of diarrhea was likely a result of irritable bowel disease. The recommendation was to put him on Royal Canin’s duck food (for cats, not for ducks). Right away, we could see the difference as it wasn’t just firmer poop, but his coat is noticeably glossier, he sheds less AND no more flakes! Cost of this at the vets’ (5 lb bag) is over $80; at Chewy, it’s $54. And shipping is free with super friendly service (we had to get a prescription from the vet to Chewy). What’s not to love?

  • Kitty with IBS

    By on

One of my kitties (a rescue) had a bad case of coccidia when we found him (3 weeks old). After several treatments, he recovered. About one year later he started having "explosive diarrhea" caused by eating regular kitty food and prescription urinary food, which our other rescue has to eat. After expensive testing, it was determined that he probably had some kind of IBS type problem. This food along with prescription probiotics has been the answer. He is doing FABULOUS!!!

  • Great food for hair loss

    By on

Nutsey started losing his hair awhile back. Ultimately, the vet concluded it was food allergy. She prescribed the PD. Both cats liked it. Nutsey's hair grew back. So after a year I decided to try different foods. His hair begin to fall out again?! So we're back to PD. It's working again. It takes awhile to see results.

  • Great Cat food, Great company to order from

    By on

I used to run around looking for vet's offices that carried this product for my cats. NO more! I ordered for the first time on chewy.com and such a great experience. The order was priced right, arrived quickly to my front door ...it was so convenient.

This is my first order with Chewy and I can honestly say they have great prices, fast shipping and wonderful customer service! I will definitely be ordering from them again and I’ll probably find a toy or two to add to my order for my cats!

  • So far so good...

    By on

I can't yet tell if my cat, with his food allergies, will take to this, but so far he seems to be tolerating it. Have to give a big shout out to Chewy Customer Service, they are awesome! I got this food super fast, which was really helpful given that my cat was in dire need of a change and they refunded the previous food I bought and told me to donate it to a shelter when it didn't work out for my cat and his allergies!

  • Good food but Royal Canine can't keep it in stock

    By on

This review is not about Chewy, which is a well run company. the Royal Canine duck dry for cats is a good food but along with other Royal Canine products, the RC management does not seem to be able to keep their foods in stock. Given that they are selling these foods like medicine -- at a high price and requiring a vet to sign off, it is really irresponsible on the part of RC management be out of stock for weeks. If your animal has an allergy and you have managed to find a food that alleviates the problem, having it out of stock for literally weeks at a time is problem and a reflection of a poorly run company.
