Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?
We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.
How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Royal canine canned diabetic cat food
By Stubbs on Feb 22, 2021
Our cat who is diabetic was using another canned food. We were throwing half of it out because she wouldn’t eat it. Now with the Royal canine she cleans the plate. So much happier. Also appreciate that the cans are smaller in volume and feel that also keeps us from waiting so much food.

Necessary Prescription Food
By Thomas on Jan 22, 2021
My cat, Rhett, is an elderly cat with health issues that require prescription food. I have been feeding him the hard food version, and he recently started to avoid eating, causing concern. Our veterinarian suggested we alternate with the soft version of the food. So far, Rhett appears to be eating a bit more now.

Blend the food
By TootsiesMom on Dec 11, 2020
I want to thank a prior reviewer who recommended to blend the food. My picky diabetic cat loves gravy she would lap up the gravy and leave the chunks of food. I put 3 cans in blender then store in a container and mix with her beloved fancy feast at feeding times works like a charm she can't get enough. As far as does the food actually work to lower levels I don't know my cat is on insulin as well but I would like to believe anyway with the high price of this food and the work I have to do with the blender that it does help.

Cat eats it up
By LindaB on Jan 19, 2021
My diabetic cat was originally on a recurring order of the M/D vet diet from Hill's until it went on backorder and I needed a replacement quickly. I found this, my vet approved the diet and my cat seems to enjoy it. They are smaller cans so I have to buy more, unfortunately.

Royal Canin
By Shorty on Jan 11, 2021
My cat is 12 years old and has been sick a lot this year. Have tried a number of different wet food but lots of time he wouldn't eat but a little and walk away. He is a very picky eater. I was really surprised when a friend gave me some of the prescription can food to try. So far he's been better.

Great choice for my diabetic kitty
By Kittycatgal on Jan 8, 2021
My diabetic "Jazzy Cat" loves this food: Royal Canin Glycobalance. I have to keep trying different foods until I find one that she likes. She's very finicky but really loves this flavor.

My diabetic cat likes this food. Chewy has quick and accurate shipping. I do wish they used someone other than FedEx for shipping.

Recent diabetic
By Figs on Oct 18, 2020
My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes and this food was recommended by his Veterinarian. At first he wouldn’t eat it and it dawned on me, it might be because it wasn’t in a pate consistency. So I mashed the food with a fork prior to serving it to him and he loves it! He doesn’t leave anything in his dish. I am happy to finally find something he loves. Highly recommend it.
