Holding the paw firmly, trim top of nail with a single stroke. Be careful to stop short of the quick, the blood vessel inside the nail. Use safety stop to prevent trimming nails too short. If pet's nails are very long, trim a small amount. Repeat every 7-10 days until nails are at desired length. Monthly trimming should be sufficient thereafter.

Finally after going through 2 other pairs by other brands, that just weren't up to par, I found a pair that I like and that did the job well the first time I used them. These are for small dogs and were smaller than any of the others I had bought. I love them! They fit in my hand so good! Not at all bulky or awkward. Seems I must have been buying them too buy! The first cut took me by surprise as the blades cut quickly and sharply, no tug. My old ones were never that sharp, even in the beginning. I hope they stay this way. I have cut 2 dogs paws so far. My dogs are dachshunds but their claws are still thick, especially the ones that are black. For about $10. these are great little clippers!
I purchased this nail trimmer to trim my 35 lb. dog's nails. I had been using a guillotine nail trimmer, but the blade was quite dull, as we had used it since the late 1990's or early 2000s, and it was time for a replacement. I saw these were the highest rated nail trimmers on Chewy. I do not use the safety guard, but they are easy to handle (much better than the guillotine clippers I was using before these) and this trimmer cut his nails very clean (there were no jagged or crumbly pieces). I highly recommend!
Not sure if I got a crummy/defective pair but these have stopped working! I previously owned a pair that became dull after a few years but were reliable. Unfortunately I bought these replacement ones in May and have always had issues with the cutters locking on me while cutting. Now it seems like only one blade will cut. I've tried adjusting the screw/bolt to no avail.
Quality of handle is nice , but Quality of blade is horrible. You can't slowest cut through the nail I have a pair of cheap ones that glide through the nail. But these it's really really tough to get through. Blade is very very poorly made. I have a 90 pound sheperd husky mix so he has girthy nails. But again... these clippers have a very hard time cutting. When you squeeze nothing happens. But when u squeeze hard. Alor harder it goes yaba kaboo and snaps through. Weak blade! 2 stars.will seek another pair...
I love these nail trimmers! They are great for small/medium dogs and cats. I recommended these to some friends and they love them too.
Sharp-doesn't pull on fur or nails. Has stop set for length so doesn't get too short. Safety lock. Despite all these wonderful features, he hid the last ones, and I still haven't found them.
Green handle makes it easy to see. My 65lb pit mix still hates having his nails trimmed but these make it easier for me to use. They are sharp and the grip makes then easy to hold.
I had bought a pair of these trimmers a few months ago, they were supposed to be for small to medium dogs. They were just too small for my hands and not really sized well for our corgi and aussie cattle dog, they pinch my hands every time I use them. BUT....these latest pair I bought are super, sharp easy to use.....and don't pinch my hands.
Vet advised changing to this style of clipper to avoid tearing nails or cutting the quick. So far, it works great AND the cat is less distressed.
Would NOT recommend! 1. The mail “guard” is bent away from the clipper edge further away than it should be. 2. Also when you’re quickly trying to clip nails, the guard does NOT stay in place. It’s constantly flipping down. This makes it extremely hard to clip nails correctly let alone, quickly! Because of this it incorrectly cut my poor pups nail to the qwick!!!!!! So MAD!!!!!!!!!
