Transition Instructions
Most cats adapt easily to ScoopFree boxes and use it within a week. If your cat needs help adjusting, try these tips:
- Leave your cat's old litter box next to the ScoopFree box.
- Add a few handfuls of your cat’s old litter to the ScoopFree litter tray and add a few handfuls of the ScoopFree crystal litter in your cat's old litter box.
- Stop cleaning the old litter box. As the old litter becomes more shallow and dirty, your cat should start using the cleaner ScoopFree box.
- If your cat is startled by the raking noise, turn off the ScoopFree box and scoop waste manually for a few days until your cat is used to the new box.
Training Kittens
Kittens have a natural reflex to use the bathroom after eating, playing, or napping. Put your kitten in the litter box after these activities to help her associate the litter tray with the instinct.
- Place the litter box away from the food and water bowl. Cats prefer not to use the bathroom near where they eat and drink.
- Put the litter box in a quiet, visible place where she can get to it quickly. Getting all the way across the house to find the litter box could result in accidents. The location should also be safe and quiet so your kitten won't be startled or distracted.
- Keep the box clean. Scoop waste often and change the litter tray every few weeks. Cats and kittens prefer a clean box.
- Stir the litter crystals once a week to distribute saturated crystals. Kittens pee more often than adult cats, so the litter box will get dirty more quickly.
Troubleshooting
Indicator light is flashing rapidly, and rake is at home position.
- Check if waste trap is full. If so, replace litter tray.
- Check for obstructions and remove if necessary.
- Make sure magnets on waste cover are properly attached to litter tray. If not, lift waste cover and lower it back down; you should hear a “click” when correctly attached to the tray.
- Make sure waste trap cover is properly installed.
- Ensure litter box is level and seated properly on litter tray.
- Ensure litter is evenly distributed. Never add extra litter.
- Unplug the litter box and wait a few seconds. Plug the litter box in again. When the rake returns to the home position, the indicator light will glow solid green.
Indicator light is flashing rapidly (8 times per second), and rake is stopped several inches away from the home position.
- Check for any obstructions behind the rake. If so, unplug the litter box and remove obstruction. Wait a few seconds.
- Plug the litter box in again. The rake should return to the home position and the indicator light will turn on solid green.
Indicator light is flashing medium (4 times per second), and system will not rake after the countdown time elapses.
- Check to see if the detection sensors are obstructed.
- Unplug box and clear any litter or waste that may have collected on the sensors. After cleaning, plug it back in.
- When the rake returns to the home position, the indicator light should turn on solid green.
Magnets on waste trap cover do not attach to litter tray.
- Waste trap cover may not be properly installed. See “Care and Cleaning” page 13 to remove and reinstall waste trap Cover.
- Then press down on waste trap cover or lift waste trap on litter tray until you hear a click, indicating magnets have attached to the tray.
Litter box frame is not level on litter tray. The litter box should rest on the litter tray when installed, not on the floor. Make sure the litter box is completely level on the litter tray (see “Litter Tray Installation ” page 8).
Can ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box be used with multiple cats?
ScoopFree was designed for use with one or two cats. If you have more than two cats, it is recommended to have at least one litter box for every two cats.
How big are the litter trays? Litter trays are 22” x 14-1/2” x 2-1/2”. ScoopFree Sensitive White Crystal Litter Trays do not include lids and can be nested, allowing them to be stored in a smaller space.
How big is ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box?
The ScoopFree litter bed measures 14” W x 15-1/2” L, and the exterior litter box dimensions are 19-1/8” W x 27-5/8” L x 6-3/8” H. The height is 16” with the optional hood installed (the Ultra comes with the privacy hood).
How will I know when to change the litter tray?
You should change the litter tray when either of the following occurs:
- The crystal litter is saturated. As the crystals absorb urine, the litter will start to turn yellow. Once the majority of the litter turns yellow, the crystals are nearing their saturation point. When the crystals can no longer absorb any more moisture, you may start to notice an odor from the urine.
- The waste trap is full. When the waste trap is full, the waste trap cover will not close completely. You may see small pieces of solid waste sticking out from underneath the lid. You may also start to notice an odor from the solid waste.
See “Maximizing Litter Tray Life” page 13 to help get the most life from the Disposable Crystal Litter Trays.
What if my cat goes back into the box soon after it’s been used?
The rake will not clean if a cat is in the litter box because it will be obstructing the detection sensors. The countdown timer will reset itself and the rake will begin to clean 20 minutes (or 5, 10, or 20 if you have ScoopFree Ultra) after your cat leaves the litter box again.
What is the difference between ScoopFree Original and Ultra?
ScoopFree Ultra functions like the ScoopFree Original with three added features:
- Privacy hood gives your cat a private bathroom while helping keep the crystal litter properly contained. (The privacy hood can be purchased separately for use with the ScoopFree Original. See “Replacement Parts and Accessories” page 16.)
- Adjustable rake timer allows you to choose if the automatic rake sweeps waste 5, 10, or 20 minutes after your cat uses the litter box. (The ScoopFree Original waits 20 minutes.)
- Health counter tracks the frequency of your cat’s litter box usage to help alert to possible health issues.
What are the differences among the Original Scent Blue Crystal Litter Tray, Lavender Scent Crystal Litter Tray, and the Sensitive White Crystal Litter Tray?
- The Original Scent Blue Crystal Litter Tray comes pre-filled with crystal litter with a light Fresh Clean scent. The Lavender Scent Crystal Litter Tray is pre-filled with crystal litter with a light, soothing lavender scent. Both litter trays include a lid. When the tray is ready to be replaced, simply cover it and toss it in the trash.
- The Sensitive White Crystal Litter Tray is made from recycled materials (paper with no bleach added) and comes pre-filled with crystal litter free of perfumes and dyes which is perfect for sensitive cats or owners. Sensitive White Crystal Litter Trays do not come with a lid so the trays nest, making them easier to stack and store in small spaces. A drawstring bag is included for easy disposal.
- The crystal litter for all litter trays have been tested independently and performs the same. The crystal litter absorbs urine and dries solid waste quickly to remove odors.
1-Year Limited Warranty.

Take a Break From Litter Duty
PetSafe's ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box lets you take a break from scooping—for good. This self-cleaning system rakes through the litter, pushing waste into a covered trap at one end of the tray. Odors and liquid waste are absorbed by the quick-drying crystal litter. And you can rest easy, because your days of endless scooping are over.

Fresh and Clean Every Time
Every time kitty needs to go, she'll step into a dry, freshly cleaned litter box—the kind cats prefer. The motorized rake sweeps new waste into the covered compartment, waiting 20 minutes after your cat uses the box so she won't be startled. Because it's automatic, the ScoopFree box stays clean for weeks at a time. One tray lasts 20-30 days before needing to be replaced, for single-cat homes.
3 Simple Steps

1. Load It
Lift the box and slide a disposable litter tray underneath. It only takes a minute!

2. Leave It
ScoopFree automatically rakes the waste into a covered trap, so you can relax.

3. Toss It
Replace the soiled tray every few weeks with a fresh one.
Fast-Drying Crystals for Odor Control
The blue silica crystals in each disposable tray are five times more effective at odor reduction than clay or clumping litters. Liquids are trapped by the leakproof liner, and the crystals work fast to absorb them on contact. A dry litter box is less prone to bacterial growth—and the smell that comes with it.

It’s better than regular kitty boxes
By Danielle on Mar 29, 2021
I’ve never owned a cat before but I have taken care of people (and their cats) so I KNEW I didn’t want a litter I had to clean. This is SO simple. It was so easy to put together and my new kitty used it without any coaching (although I did lock her in the room with it for 24 hrs) Cleaning it makes me want to cry bc it’s SO EASY!!! You legit put the lid on it, I tape the sides, and then put it in the trash. And slide a new pan with litter in. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is bc when she uses the bathroom (before it cleans itself after 20 min) the smell is HORRID! I wish it didn’t wait 20 min to clean bc she uses it often and those 20 min are not fun. automatic cat box
By HappyCat on Mar 16, 2021
This product is definitely worth the money. This is 22 days and I probably won’t change it for a few more. My cat loves it, and we absolutely love it. There is no smell when he goes to the bathroom.and our room does not smell like cat box. You got to buy this product. I was kind of skeptical because I have bought several other automatic cat boxes through the years. Was unsatisfied within the first couple weeks. But this one, wow. It delivers exactly what it says. I’m a huge fan of this product. So the ones that want to be cheap and don’t want to buy an automatic cat box, have fun scooping. Those days are over. And my cat is so happy because he’s got a clean cat box each time. I love This product is definitely worth the money. This is 22 days and I probably won’t change it for a few more. disappointed
By catlady on Mar 18, 2021
This was my first purchase of an automatic scooping litter box. My expectations were high. 1. It was difficult to take out of the box and set up - took some wrangling. 2. The crystals and the cardboard trays are not cheap and you cant use regular clumping litter instead. 3. The cardboard trays are coated in wax? so they don't absorb liquids, so the urine stays in the box in the bottom of the crystals, it turns them from blue to green. 4. The urine smell is still present so my finicky old cat doesn't like it and pees outside the box. The only upside to this unit is it is big enough for the cat to get in and do their business. It has a nice night light. The scoop mechanism does work This was my first purchase of an automatic scooping litter box. My expectations were high. 1. It traps the good litter behind the scoop arm and you have to fish it out, I'm still having to manually remove the wet crystals daily. That defeats the whole purpose of an automatic unit,. The crystals also get outside the box and on the floor if you step on them they hurt, like hard chunky pieces of glass,, and can scratch hardwood floors,, … more

Worst Litter Box EVER!!!
By CrapBox on Mar 29, 2021
We have two kittens.... I ordered this box hoping that it would make my life easy, and keep odors to a minimum. WRONG!!! It ran the rake (that is supposed to push poop into the closed box front) through poop that was too fresh, and created this nasty poop covered metal grate. There was always cat poop stuck in the grate and exposed to the air, so the smell was awful. So disappointed. Maybe for a single cat, or an older cat? Not for us. Oy! Worst money ever spent!!!! Walk away right meow!

I Love It!
By NinjaKitty on Mar 14, 2021
A friend recommended it, I thought it was expensive for a cat box, but my son never cleans the old one which needs cleaning every other day and I always have to yell about it, ugh! It was very easy to set up, and i changed the tray after 2 weeks but it really could have gone 3-4 more, the crystals seem to shrink down the poop and no more heavy clumps of pee because the crystals absorb it too. So no more smell, no more seeing a dirty letter box. Very happy, I actually thought it ran on batteries because the videos did not show a cord, but it worked out.

litter gets everywhere!
By Margo15 on Mar 17, 2021
I honestly really like it bc I don’t have to ever clean it. We had it for almost 5 months and I have only two issues with it. The first one is that the odor is REAL. I can smell everything my cat does and I know that other people have issues with it too. But the main issues is that those crystals get all over my apartment. I find them in my couch, my bed, floor and around the litter box. I put a mat under the box but it does nothing. The crystals are all around the litter box area. If someone struggles with the same issue, please help me to find a solution!

Weak motor... Stalls... No longer works...
By Wendy on Apr 2, 2021
The motor stalled frequently, because it couldn't drive the rake over liter piles that are typical of what cats do. Very unreliable as an automatic liter box that jams every day. It stopped working at only 11 months. The liter is expensive and only last 2 weeks if that. This could be a good product if the motor was sized properly. I do not recommend this product.

Save your money
By Faith on Mar 11, 2021
I got this in hoping to make my life easier with the self cleaning feature and even bought the hood to go over it to make it more appealing. The SMELL is SO BAD. When I had just a basic litter box with clay litter there was NO smell but with this litter box I cannot stand the smell of cat pee and poo. It does nothing to cover it. I have tried everything from odor absorbers to room fresheners and nothing makes the smell go away. Not worth it, and they trays don't last as long as they say. Very disappointed.

This is good, while it worked.
By KatieL on Mar 31, 2021
This litter box worked wonderfully while it did work. We didn't originally realize that it doesn't run right away, but that the pee/poo needs to be "dried out" first and then it runs. It's really convenient, and worked well. Unfortunately, after about 7 weeks, it sounds like it's trying to run, but the rake just won't move anymore.

I wanted this to be it soo badly!!
By Melissa on Feb 24, 2021
To start, this litter box is a dream! It’s easy to assemble, low maintenance and tells you how many times your cat has used it. My reasoning for the two stars... since I bought it almost 3 months ago, my two cats have only stepped foot in it 5 times. There is nothing noisy that scares them, I think they just know that it’s different because of the crystal litter and they refuse to use it. I have two other plain litter boxes in the house that we clean regularly. Our perfect combo ended up compromising to add a pretty cabinet with a regular litter box inside. I’m bummed because this was a really expensive litter box and now it’s just a really expensive floor ornament.
