About PetSafe Scoopfree Litter Box

Take a Break From Litter Duty

PetSafe's ScoopFree Automatic Litter Box lets you take a break from scooping—for good. This self-cleaning system rakes through the litter, pushing waste into a covered trap at one end of the tray. Odors and liquid waste are absorbed by the quick-drying crystal litter. And you can rest easy, because your days of endless scooping are over.

Fresh and Clean Every Time

Every time kitty needs to go, she'll step into a dry, freshly cleaned litter box—the kind cats prefer. The motorized rake sweeps new waste into the covered compartment, waiting 20 minutes after your cat uses the box so she won't be startled. Because it's automatic, the ScoopFree box stays clean for weeks at a time. One tray lasts 20-30 days before needing to be replaced, for single-cat homes.

3 Simple Steps

1. Load It

Lift the box and slide a disposable litter tray underneath. It only takes a minute!

2. Leave It

ScoopFree automatically rakes the waste into a covered trap, so you can relax.

3. Toss It

Replace the soiled tray every few weeks with a fresh one.

Fast-Drying Crystals for Odor Control

The blue silica crystals in each disposable tray are five times more effective at odor reduction than clay or clumping litters. Liquids are trapped by the leakproof liner, and the crystals work fast to absorb them on contact. A dry litter box is less prone to bacterial growth—and the smell that comes with it

why are the crystals sold separately when there are refill trays ? are the separate crystals needed as extra litter ?
Answer by ChewyMar 29, 2018
The crystals are sold separately because the Litter system does have the option of a reusable litter tray instead of just disposable.

how is it for xlg cats? my cat is like 15 20#s as big a a small dog
Answer by ChewyJun 29, 2017
The litter box for these trays measures 19 1/8 x 27 5/8 x 6 3/8 inches so the cat of this size can use the litter box, however, you may experience decreased life in the tray.

Does anyone know why it isnt recommended for kittens under 6 months? Thanks
Answer by ChewyJul 28, 2017
The ScoopFree Litter Tray Refills with Premium Blue Crystals can be used by kittens under 6 months old but they may need to be replaced more often as young kittens urinate more frequently than adult cats.

Do these trays come empty? I just took on the care of a cat that came with one of these machines along with several bags of the blue crystals.
Answer by ChewyOct 05, 2017
The premium blue crystals are included in the ScoopFree litter tray refills.

Quality of Product stinks both literally and odor wise

Before: We have one cat - got this product several years ago - the replacement cat litter was around $35 and the boxes never leaked, stayed odorless and lasted about 4 weeks. This was a quality product. Now: We still have one cat - the replacement cat litter is now $71 with tax. The box gets saturated with urine and stinks after 2.5 weeks. This is now a crappy product. We're going back to the old self scooping method. Too bad.

They’ve changed litter amount

I’ve been using this system for years and for the most part we’ve been fine with it. But the last few months or so the litter refills seem to have less and less crystals for a higher price. The white box beneath the crystals is showing and I need to buy extra to make it through our normal 3 week period. Very disappointed and don’t recommend.

Smelly after 4-5 days, cat didn't like the texture, tracks around the house

For one of my cats this litter was acceptable. He used it, the robo-box swept through and tucked the feces away. The urine however, just gets soaked into the individual crystals - smells. I got about 1-2 weeks out of these trays in a house with 2 cats. Very expensive and feels like a terrible choice environmentally. The other cat hated the texture, wouldn't use this box and peed on my furniture and carpet instead. Took me too long to realize the litter was the problem, not the cat. Thank you vet! Go with a clay clumping litter instead and scoop frequently. So much better, all problems resolved.

Great especially for a one cat household

I received the Petsafe litter box for Christmas. I could only get one of my cats to use it (about 14lb.) and is inside/outside so uses the outdoors fairly frequently. I started using this in Dec 2021. I kept waiting for it to smell but it didn't. I would scoop the poops out periodically but the kicker is that in JULY 2022, I finally decided to get new litter. It sounds crazy but the existing litter literally did not smell. There was a subtle odor if you put your nose really close, but that smell wasn't like cat urine smell. When I dumped the old litter in a garbage bag, I checked out the tray. It had no stains or anything. It is coated cardboard, so I believe that is what keeps it from getting stained and stinky. I wiped it down with an everyday kitchen cleaner and it was good as new. My take-away? If you have one cat that isn't huge, you can get away with keeping one tray of litter for much longer than you would expect. In the future I am going to buy just the crystals and keep the same tray until it starts to smell. That way I am not filling the landfill with lots of crystals and cardboard every month. The reviews for the "reusable" trays they sell aren't great--apparently the magnets don't work amongst other things. I would much rather reuse the regular trays.

Litter doesn’t last

Like many other reviewers, I find these boxes last a maximum of two weeks with a single cat. I’ve tried all their suggestions (adding extra litter, stirring a couple times a week) to extend the litter life. They’re convenient and they work, but wayyyy more expensive and wasteful than the description suggests.

Great litter

I'm sure I use this differently than intended but it works. I do not have the system. I cut off the hanging part and just put the tray down nexted to into the lid. With my old 5 pound cat it lasted a month. With the big 3 year old and 12 week kitten it lasts 2 weeks. I do scoop poop and just rake it twice a day. When it's done it's job, I put the lid on it and toss it in the trash. So much easier than a standard litter and box.

super convenient!

I’ve been using this litter system for over a year now and don’t regret it! My cat got used to the switch really quickly and a fresh box lasts usually 3-4 weeks for my single cat, I love the convenience and peace of mind of knowing her litterbox is clean without having to remember to scoop and refresh it daily myself. Even with the unscented crystals you really don’t notice a major smell, we have her box in the corner of the living room and the only time it gets noticeably stinky is if you’re in the room while she uses it but like most bathroom smells it dissipates pretty quick and it doesn’t linger after that which I can’t say was the same case with our previous basic litter. Cleanup and disposal is really simple, and I’ve found she tracks a lot less out of the box than she did with traditional litter as well. Super happy with this system overall, even with it’s initial investment cost for the machine - the convenience is unmatched! My only real complaint is with this price increase lately, not really a fan of how expensive it’s gotten but hopefully it levels back down to normal soon! Luckily Chewy still has one of the more competitive prices compared to my local stores, but it seems to be a crazy increase everywhere!

Reduced product.

Without a word, the quantity of "litter" was cut by 25%. A gutless way of raising prices. .

too expensive

I loved these as it was so nice to just throw the box away when done. They have increased in price by 40% and unfortunately I can’t justify the expense right now.

upped the price

upped the price to an unreasonable amount for refills... Not cool. This is an investment product.
