How to Find the Best Fit: Select the carrier size based on your pet’s measurements first and then by your pet’s weight, making sure not to exceed the maximum weight limits. Also allow enough space for your pet to change positions while inside the carrier. Note: the carrier is designed for pets lying down, so your pet may not be able to stand.
How to Measure Your Pet: For pet’s length, start at the nape of the neck (where the collar falls) and measure to the base of the tail. For height, measure from the floor to the top of the shoulder.
Please weigh and measure your pet carefully. The pet's length should be measured from the nape of the neck to the base of the tail. The pet's height should be measured when it is standing, from the floor to the shoulder. Please note, pets should have enough room to lie down comfortably but also stand up and turn around should they wish to change positions.
All Sherpa carriers are soft-sided and made with a patented spring wire frame in the rear of the bag. The spring wire frame allows the back end to be pushed down several inches to slide beneath the airline seat without restricting the pet's head room.
Airline Approved means that a carrier:
Guaranteed On Board® is the only program that guarantees a Sherpa carrier meets an airline's specific rules and regulations and will be allowed on board. All small and medium Sherpa carriers are included in the GOB program. However, the medium size carrier is not Guaranteed On Board on ALL of the airlines included in the program.
Just because a particular airline is not included in the Guaranteed On Board program it does not mean your carrier will not be allowed on board, just that you will need to confirm directly with the airline. Please note, our carriers are soft-sided and made with a patented spring wire frame that allows the back end to be pushed down several inches to slide beneath the airline seat without restricting the pet's head room.
Please check with airline directly. Some airlines allow carriers that are larger than the dimensions they specify if the carrier is soft-sided and pushes down. All Sherpa carriers are made with a patented spring wire frame in the rear of the bag which allows the end to be pushed down several inches to conform to the under seat dimensions without restricting the pet's head room or compromising the structural integrity of the bag.
No. If the style / size carrier you have is not included in a particular airline's GOB page it is not Guaranteed On Board that particular airline because its dimensions exceed what the airline specifies as being allowed on board.
About Sherpa Travel Pet Carriers
Sherpa Travel Pet Carriers
Sherpa Travel Carriers are airline-approved carriers that let your pet travel comfortably on the go, in the car or on walks. They are easy to use and durable enough to keep your pet safely contained and protected.
Fits Under Most Airline Seats
Sherpa Carriers with a built-in spring-wire frame allow you to push down the rear side of the carrier several inches. This helps them fit under most airline seats in compliance with airline requirements and FAA regulations. The flexible design makes the carrier in-cabin friendly and airline approved for most airlines.
Fly With Peace of Mind
Sherpa worked with major airlines to make a carrier that is Guaranteed On Board. Sherpa’s Guaranteed On Board program provides you the information you need for future travels with your pet and added assurance that your carrier will be allowed to fly.
Sherpa Makes Travel Easy
Sherpa Carriers feature mesh panels for ventilation, top and side entries, locking zippers for added safety and a seatbelt safety strap.
About Sherpa
In 1989, Sherpa introduced their first soft-sided carriers so pets could fly in-cabin. Today, they continue to innovate to make traveling secure and comfortable for every pet – every day and on every trip. Whether you’re going around the block, across town or on a flight around the world, Sherpa products will help you travel with peace of mind.
I saw this carrier at my local pet store selling for $100. Chewy's prices beat that by 50%! We bought this initially to fly with our cat, but we decided to drive instead. This product is sturdy and has enough ventilation to help with nervous kitties. I recommend this size for cats under 13 lbs to help carry up and down stairs.
i haven’t used it for travel yet. but a way to “crate train” to get them more comfortable with the vet, it looks like it’s doing good. i think the hard sided carriers are too intimidating and they rarely will go into them. since getting this, they all love to lay in it and play with their toys. i originally only bought it for my one cat who has terrible traveling anxiety, but i’ll have to buy 2 more for the others. they just seem to like them so much and i bet they feel much more comfortable than the hard sided carriers.
After almost 40 years of cat companions and hard sided carriers we have now entered an era of trauma-free vet visits. We needed one new carrier and this was our choice. Left it out for the cats to explore and they have made it their warm nest..which meant packing them up for the trip to the vet was a breeze. Still have one hard sided carrier which is not as easy to load or carry…will likely be donated for a second one of these.
One of mine fights about being enclosed. Hates it and will panic in carriers. This opens on top which I prefers to put a cat through. And it's roomy for my big girl with still room to move around. The mesh is strong. Saves the hands and arms when you put them through the top. With a little Gabapentin from the vet, easy trips.
Purchased to pick up new pup who is no more than 10lbs. This bag was a bit too small for him. I love the bag and the fact that it has pockets but I now have no use for it
We have seven rescue cats and just bought another carrier. The cats all give them two thumbs up (until the vet visit)!
My cat likes carrier so much that she sleeps in it. I could not get her in the carrier she had. She went in it as soon as I got it set up.
I adopted my cat 12 days ago. she's 2 years old and weighs 8lbs. When they gave me her vaccination info, I saw that I was going to have to come back to the shelter's clinic to get her an updated vaccine. As a new cat mom, I was apprehensive: cat crate or cat carrier bag? I read many reviews, including for this one. I saw that some people's pets broke through the mesh, so I almost planned on returning this but decided to give it a try. I didn't know if she would be an anxious traveler. She eased up to me pretty much on day one, so I knew I wouldn't have too much of a bad time, but I dreaded setting up the vaccine appointment. Not sure if this might help some people, but I kept the traveler bag next to her favorite napping site so that it could be familiar to her. I also gave her pet treats inside the bag a few times so she could associate it with snacks/ something that is safe. The mesh is actually VERY STRONG in my opinion. I assumed it would be more flimsy because of those reviews. A pet would have to gnaw at this for a long time before they could break through the mesh. Maybe a dog could do it faster than a cat. Idk. Regardless, she didn't try to bite her way out. I appreciate that she had enough room to turn around, because when she walked in, she was facing the back of the bag which had no mesh. I didn't want her to see black fabric the entire ride (if she didn't have space to move), but she rotated to face the front of the bag which had the mesh. I measured her with a tape measure at first when deciding between medium and large, and she was about 19 inches long (when standing at a comfortable pose). I didn't realize that she would most likely be sitting with her legs tucked in. As you can see in the photos, there was a lot more room in the bag, so when I was walking down the stairs, I had to keep the bag flat or it felt like she would've been sliding around. I'll see if I can return this for a medium. If you're going to be using it often, try not to get one that's too big. but I won't be using this that often, so it's fine if I can't return it. She had plenty of space which helped her feel comfortable. This is sturdy and I love it.
My cat put holes in this thing within 24 hours of just having it out in the living room to get used to. They are the perfect size for airline travel, but I would not dare use them unless your pet is extremely calm and accustomed to it. Unfortunately, I threw away the boxes and cannot return them now.
I got this carrier months ago when I adopted a cat in case I would have to fly with her (and because I needed a carrier anyway, and this one was highly rated). I will spare details but ended up having to fly with her recently. I flew United and had absolutely no issues with this carrier. She was comfortable with plenty of room (I got size medium and she is a 7 pound cat). Highly recommend this carrier.
