Most prescriptions are delivered within 3-5 days.Sileo (dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel) is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for dogs that suffer from noise aversion. This medication is prescribed by your veterinarian to help calm your dog when your pet is frightened by loud noises. Sileo treats dogs suffering from noise aversion, excessive fear, and anxiety caused by loud noises.
No serious adverse reactions are attributed to the administration of dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel in dogs.
Sileo should not be administered in the presence of pre-existing hypotension, hypoxia, or bradycardia. Sensitive dogs may experience a drop in body temperature and heart rate. These dogs should be kept warm and not offered food or water until Sileo's effects have worn off (usually within a few hours). Do not use in dogs sedated from previous dosing.
If Sileo is swallowed, do not repeat the dose for at least two hours. Feeding and giving treats within 15 minutes after administration should be avoided. The use of other central nervous system depressants may potentiate the effects of Sileo. Sileo has not been evaluated in dogs younger than 16 weeks of age or in dogs with dental or gingival diseases. Sileo has also not been evaluated for aversion behaviors to thunderstorms. Administration to pregnant dogs may induce uterine contractions and/or decrease fetal blood pressure. Not for human use. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid administering the product if pregnant, as exposure may induce uterine contractions and/or decrease fetal blood pressure. Appropriate precautions should be taken while handling and using filled syringes. Impermeable disposable gloves should be worn when handling the syringe, administering Sileo, or when coming in contact with the dog's mouth after application.
Dexmedetomidine Oromucosal Gel.
Sileo is administered onto the lining of the mouth by placing the gel between your dog’s cheek and gums, allowing for transmucosal absorption. Since the gel is absorbed through the skin, it should not be swallowed by your dog. If the gel is swallowed, the product may not be effective and do not repeat the dose for at least two hours. A dose greater than 6 dots should be divided evenly between both sides of the mouth. Use gloves in the administration of Sileo. The dosing chart is by body weight and associated number of dots. Each dot is 0.25 mL; 4 dots is equivalent to 1 mL. See instructional video above for more detailed instructions.
Store opened and unopened syringes in the original package at controlled room temperatures of 68° - 77°F. Use contents within 4 weeks after opening the syringe.
Sileo is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for canine noise aversion associated with fear and anxiety. Sileo has been proven to work on its own without other treatments or training.
Sileo is formulated as a gel that is absorbed into your dog’s body when you apply it to the mucous membranes between your dog’s cheek and gums. Dexmedetomidine (the active ingredient) calms your dog by preventing or reducing specific reactions in the nervous system.
Noise aversion is the set of anxiety- or fear-based behaviors that dogs can display when subjected to “noise triggers.”
Sileo is supplied in a 3-milliliter oral syringe. Each syringe comes with a dosing ring and end cap along with a prescribing information leaflet.
Six dots is equivalent to 1.5 mL, a dose volume that is too great to administer effectively to one side of the mouth without the risk of some of the dose being swallowed or flowing out of the mouth. Administering half of the dose on one side of the mouth and half on the other side maximizes absorption through the mucous membranes.
Much of the excess gel may flow out of the mouth or be swallowed, which would limit the effects on your dog. In a worst case scenario where the entire syringe (3 mL) is accidentally applied to a smaller dog and is fully absorbed, mild to moderate sedation may occur. As always, contact your veterinarian in any situation where you feel your dog has received too much of the prescribed medication.
State and federal medical waste laws apply. The easiest method could be to place the used syringe back into the box and return it to the veterinary clinic. Ask your veterinarian about proper disposal of empty or partially used Sileo syringes.
No. This will cause incorrect dosing. (Also, remember to wear impermeable gloves; see more in the Human Safety questions below.)
Yes, within two weeks, but only if there is enough gel remaining for a complete dose (to minimize the risk of incorrect dosing).
Although dexmedetomidine (the active ingredient in Sileo) cannot be absorbed through intact skin, it can be absorbed through breaks in the skin and through mucous membranes. Therefore, as a precaution, you should wear impermeable disposable gloves when administering SILEO to your dog.
In the case of accidental exposure to the skin, the area should be immediately and thoroughly washed; remove contaminated clothing and contact your physician if you have questions. If Sileo comes in contact with your eyes, nose or mouth, it can be absorbed into your body, so you should flush the exposed area with water for 15 minutes. If you are wearing contact lenses, flush the eyes and then remove contact lenses and continue flushing; seek medical advice immediately. If the drug is absorbed into your body, it can cause symptoms such as lowered blood pressure (which may result in dizziness, fainting, lack of concentration, blurred vision, nausea, cold, clammy or pale skin, rapid, shallow breathing), sleepiness and slower heart rate. Share package information with your physician and tell him/her that SILEO contains an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist.
We have one dog that is absolutely petrified of storms & thunder. This Sileo Gel is pricey, so we only use it when there are really bad storms visible on radar, but it works wonders and relatively quickly. I would have given five stars, but we had another dog equally as scared of storms that would throw up immediately after ingesting the sileo gel. I still recommend giving the product a try if your dog is terrified. Just keep a close eye on your pet after use to ensure there is no reaction to the product. PS...we also use on the 4th of July to minimize reaction to fireworks.
This product has improved my 9-year-old dog's quality of life. Pierre has severe anxiety and by that I mean not just fireworks but whenever a fly comes into the house or I wash dishes or I put my dishes away or there's a rainstorm or the wind. It goes on and on. He's on trazodone and that helps take the edge off but nothing works like this new product, Sileo. Trust me I've been searching for answers for 9 years and he's been on everything from tranquilizers, CBD, anti depressants hormone plugins and so on. I'm grateful for Sileo.
I used to use this product for my 11lb chihuahua and it used to work really well because it would just knock him out or really drug him up to not shake during loud noises. But I had to stop using it due to an incident where he had peed, pooped, and he couldn't lift himself up and was having problems breathing. This lasted about 10 minutes and when I had put him in the car to go to the ER he was suddenly better. But after that scary moment I had to say no to this product.
We use sileo in conjunction with other anti anxiety meds for our over reactive dog. We also crate her in a dark room during thunderstorms and fireworks. Seems to work.
My 12-year-old female dog Layla has a terrible time with fireworks and thunderstorms. They recommend that you are careful with the dosage so that you don't overdose your pet. This medicine is a gel that comes in a syringe that you put in the pocket of their mouth so they don't swallow it. It has a easy dosage system on it and worked right away with my dog on the 4th of July she went to sleep during the All Night fireworks. Best thing I found for noise aversion.
This is great stuff! It works fast and lasts a few hours. My main use is thunderstorm anxiety for my Mini Aussie. Prescription meds didn't work. This is great stuff!!
So very thankful my vet prescribed this. July 4th has always been such an anxious time for my husky and in turn for me. Sileo really helped my boy this year. Our town has a fireworks display at 10pm each year. I gave him a dose at 8:45pm and by 10pm the medication was working. Our house has the perfect view of the town display but that also means that we get the full effect of it...booms and all. Sileo helped Kimon to weather the noise without such heightened fear and trying to hurt himself (and me). This year with Sileo, my boy laid on the floor in the living room and just lifted his head when there was an especially loud boom. I love how Sileo doesn't drug him. He seemed so relaxed but not out of it. I wish it lasted longer than 2-3 hours but I am very happy with the results this year. Sileo saved us! Highly recommend!
My brother in law has been using this product for years with his small dog. I have seen it work for thunder and fireworks. Our latest rescue has acute hearing and is also terrified of thunder and fireworks. Thunderstorms have been a daily occurrence in Florida this time of year, maybe even worse than we remember. It worked first time. We actually reduced the dose to one dot and that is working almost daily. Easy to measure proper dose based on weight and follow instructions to get the gel dispensed from this syringe like dispenser. Must not let dog swallow so you hold dog’s snout while inserting down into sulcus between cheek and gum. Very quick acting to calm him down unlike a pill. Very pleased we knew of this product.
This product works so well--calms my dog without making her groggy. She just snoozes through the storm with no lasting effects.
We used Sileo over 4th of July weekend and during a thunderstorm for our Bernie/Newfie who is terrified of both events. He is on daily anxiety meds for noise aversion, but when it storms badly or with fireworks he is still a mess. He will be so scared he throws up, pants, paces and shakes. The Sileo calmed him down within 10-15mins and kept him calm throughout the noise event. We used the lowest dose recommended by our vet and it worked perfectly. We have tried lots of other meds and therapies with no success for him, this was our last hope and it worked.
