Questions & Answers

5 Customer Questions

can this grit be used for ducklings?
Answer by ChewyOct 12, 2020
The chick grit will work for ducklings as well. Ducks don't have teeth, and instead, grind up food internally in their gizzards, so they require a regular supply of granite grit. Use chick-size grit for ducklings and chicken-sized grit for adult ducks. Crushed oyster shells provide laying hens with an additional calcium source.

Can I use this grit for doves?
Answer by ChewyFeb 20, 2021
This grit could be used for doves however, we recommend consulting with your exotic vet, as it's controversial if doves even need grit.

Ok for parakeets?
Answer by ChewyMar 13, 2023
This grit is not suitable for parakeets. Parakeets (also called budgerigars or budgies) are in the parrot (or hookbill) family, and like all parrots, they remove the hull of a seed before ingesting the kernel. Poultry, on the other hand, consume the entire seed, hull and all, so they require small amounts of grit to help them grind up the seed hulls in their stomach. This product is made for poultry and could actually be harmful to a parakeet or parrot if ingested, as it could cause a gastrointestinal tract obstruction.

Could I use this grit for quail?
Answer by ChewyAug 19, 2021
This chick grit is recommended for baby chicks, ducklings, turkeys, and game birds. Birds need access to grit, which is just crushed stone and helps churn the food down, supporting proper digestion. Recommended from hatch to 6-8 weeks.

NOT GRIT! BEWARE!

Looks nothing like the picture and nothing like any grit I’ve ever used. It looks like straight up gray gravel like what you put in the bottom of a fish tank!!! Very large chunks.

No Bag - Grit loose in box

Got this ahead of time before our chicks are delivered and just flabbergasted by their packaging method. The picture of the product shows a resealable bag and instead I get a box (that I expected to have the bag enclosed) with just loose chick grit in it. It was taped up so much that when I had to cut it open a bunch of grit just fell out. It’s pretty ridiculous. Now I have to find a way to store it because they sent it in a box and it just leaks out of it.

Unpackaged chick grit in a plain box

This product does not come in a bag as shown. Nope you open the box it is mailed in and it is all over the place. It looks like an outer box. There is no pour spout or anything to indicate otherwise. What a hassle and mess.

I wish I read the reviews but it a good product just didn’t really realize it just in a box no bag so I spelled it trying to open it .

Perfect for chicks

This is perfect for chicks, it's very small. I give it to them with their crumbles.

Just what the babies need

Purchased this for our spring chicks this year. They were immediately curious when I put some in the brooder and took right to it. It’s a big enough bag that I shouldn’t need to buy more for my four little ones, this should last until they graduate to regular sized poultry grit.

Good size for chicks.

When sprinkled on top of chick mash, the chicks are attracted to eat the grit. It is nice and small for little beaks.
