The SmartCat Bootsie's Combination Scratcher lets cats tone their muscle, remove old nail sheaths, and get rid of stress without damaging your furniture or drapes. Place the post in a room where the cat spends a lot of time. Cats often like to stretch and scratch when they wake up from a nap.
To introduce the post to your cat try using catnip as a lure. (For most cats a lure is unnecessary, but fun.) Rub catnip onto the sisal material and call the cat over to the post.
Scratch your nails along the surface of the material. This will attract the cat and at the same time teach him where to scratch.
After your cat begins to scratch, praise him and give him a food treat. (Small kittens can be trained to climb the post by showing them food treats and placing it at the top of the post.
If your cat has already been scratching a piece of furniture, place the post directly in front of it.
Temporarily cover the previously scratched areas with a few strips of double-sided carpet tape or clear double-sided tape strips that are designed for this purpose. This will help redirect your cat’s scratching activities to the post.
I brought my kitty inside from outside. For the first three months this sat on the floor and he just stared at it. Then I sprayed it with catnip, and as soon as he starting scratching I told him how good he was (I swear he understands English)! Now he absolutely loves it! He uses it multiple times a day, every day now. But I really did have to spray it with liquid catnip for him, at first, for him to get interested. He's used to scratching on fallen branches, so he like that it's flat on the floor. He's a big boy - 15lbs of muscle - and this scratcher is up to the job! I do not cut his claws, and he doesn't use them on anything else!
Bella Likes It!
on May 2, 2020
I decided to get a scratcher that you can lie flat, hoping that my cat Bella would take to it and stop destroying one of my upholstered chairs when she gets hungry. At first she just looked at it, so I sprinkled some catnap on it, which she gobbled up. After a day or so, she starting using it for scratching. She hasn't gone for the chair nearly as often now that she has this scratcher.
Love the lay down option
on Apr 4, 2020
We have several different types of scratchers, but this is the only one that can lay down flat on the floor so the cats can utilize the entire scratcher. It was a hit straight out of the box and is definitely a favorite already. The cats not only scratch it all the time but also just like to lounge around on it as well.
BLACKIE LIKES IT
on Apr 12, 2020
i put a little catnip and catnip spray on it and put it on the floor. He went over to check it out, hopped on, and gave it a good scratch then turned around and sat on it. This is what he now does daily. I haven't seen him scratch anywhere else. Success!!!!

This was smaller/shorter than I expected, but I love how you can mount it on the wall. We currently have it on the ground and the cats love to play hide and seek games with a wand toy that fits underneath the scratcher. It works nicely as a horizontal scratcher and doesn't slide across the floor at all!
Great quality, kitties love it!

My two kitties love this. I left it straight on the floor instead of mounting it, and they go nuts over it! One of them prefers to scratch horizontally so this is her preferred scratcher.
My kitty loves it and Chewy ROCKS!
on Apr 5, 2020
This is a replacement after 3 or 4 years of aggressive scratching on the first one. And huge thanks to Chewy and all the employees for being here when things are tough. Well worth waiting for the shipment.
Well made, cats not interested
on Apr 20, 2020
This scratcher seems to be well made, but neither our cat nor foster cats were interested in it. Tried putting catnip on it and it seems to be a dud.
Wishing for a Replacement Pad
on Mar 25, 2020
My two cats love this but I need to replace the pad they shredded. Why don’t you sell one for $10 or so? You could make money. As it is I will replace with a carpet remnant.
Cats love to scratch these scratchers
on Feb 19, 2020
I love these scratch pads and so do my four cats. They last about a year and hold up very well. I have order three of them in the past and will order more in the future. They hold up better than the cardboard ones that are available in the retail stores.
