Description

Save your floors and furniture with Soft Claws Nail Caps for Kittens. A safe and pain-free alternative to declawing, Soft Claws works by simply capping your cat’s claws with a vinyl cover. It applies easily with a safe and non-toxic adhesive, and will not interfere with the normal extension and retraction of their nails—which means even the fussiest kitty won’t mind wearing them. So your cat can go about his routine of pawing and playing, and you don’t have to worry about unwanted scratches. Easy to apply and long lasting, it’s made right here in the USA.

Key Benefits

  • Developed by a veterinarian as a non-surgical declaw alternative and made in the USA.
  • Vinyl caps cover nails and protect against destructive scratching. Easy application with a safe and non-toxic glue.
  • Cleat Lock System features a series of self-locking cleats for an improved grip, and the Soft Cuff design fits snugly around the nail.
  • Fits most kittens at 16 weeks of age. Does not interfere with normal claw extension and retraction.
  • Each application lasts four to six weeks, and each kit comes with a four to six-month supply.

Instructions

  • Trim the tip of your cat's nails. Trim just enough to allow the nail cap to fit all the way to the base of the nail.
  • Fill nail caps 1/3 full with adhesive. Gently squeeze the nail cap to evenly distribute the glue and release any air bubbles. If the glue oozes out of the nail cap, you have inserted too much adhesive. Remove some of the glue by squeezing it onto a paper towel.
  • Extend nails by gently pressing thumb on top with index finger on bottom of paw -- slide nail caps onto nail.
  • Observe cat for five minutes before release. You can play with your cat or feed some of kitty's favorite food to distract for a few minutes.
  • Soft Paws will fit most kittens by the time they reach the age of 16 weeks (4 months). Some kittens can wear them as early as age 12 weeks (3 months) . To test, try a nail cap on first without the adhesive. If it looks too big, don't glue it on. The nail cap should fit snugly, like a glove, but not cover the cuticle. The kitten size generally fits kittens up to about 5 pounds and about 5 months of age.
  • To accommodate smaller kittens, you can trim the base of the nail cap, making it smaller so it will fit your kitten's nail.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Soft Paws?

Soft Paws are an excellent alternative to declawing. They are easy to apply at home, and cats and their owners love them. They are completely safe and humane and can be used on cats of all ages. Soft Paws are vinyl nail caps that are glued on to your cat's existing nails. They look like a cat's nail, only hollow. They are easy to apply and cats tolerate them extremely well.

How long do they last, and how often do they need to be reapplied?

Once the nail caps are applied, they remain in place for approximately 4-6 weeks. They will fall off with the natural growth of your cat's nails. We recommend that you check your cat's nails periodically because usually just one or two fall off at a time, and these can easily be reapplied. Each kit contains 40 nail caps so one kit will last approximately 4-6 months per cat.

Are Soft Paws safe? Do they hurt the cat?

Soft Paws are completely safe, painless, and non-toxic for cats. Even if they are swallowed, they will not cause a problem for your cat. They just pass on through the digestive system. Even the dried glue is entirely harmless because it becomes inert, or chemically inactive, as it dries in place.

Can cats still extend and retract their claws while wearing Soft Paws?

Absolutely. Soft Paws are designed so that they won't interfere with the normal extension and retraction of cats' claws.Cats extend and retract their claws by flexing and extending a tendon, much like when you extend your ankle to point your toe. The nail does not retract into a sheath, even though that is how it might appear. Soft Paws® nail caps are thicker and blunter than your cat's nails, so they are more visible than the nails normally are. If a colored nail cap is used, it is even more visible. Cats' nails are thin at the ends, so they are difficult to see normally unless they are extended.

Will Soft Paws interfere with my cat's normal stretching and scratching behavior?

No. Your cat can still stretch and make scratching motions, however no damage will occur to your furniture because the claw is effectively covered and protected.

I was super anxious about sharp little kitten claws on my much-loved furnishings. I brought my 10-week old kitten home 2 days ago and put these on while she was sleeping. She noticed them for about 2 minutes and has not bothered them since. I felt a little guilty at first about using these but my kitten had a maniac burst of energy last night and went nuts around the house, climbing and jumping on everything in sight. Without Soft Claws more than one piece of furniture would have been a casualty. I’m hoping to use these as a training tool and teach the kitten to claw the appropriate items. Perhaps when she is older I will no longer require them, but I am sure glad I have them now. I would be I was super anxious about sharp little kitten claws on my much-loved furnishings. I have always had dogs, until my daughter found a small kitten in our hostas. She plays well with my dogs, but I worry about the dogs eyes. The kitten is about 4-5 months old. I wasn't sure to order x-small kitten or small more than five lbs. I ordered the x-small kitten and I still had to trim them. So they're perfect. I thought there would take a few days for her to acclimate to the caps, but she doesn't seem to care. Then again she lives with three dogs (beagle mix, black and tan coon mix and shiba inu mix, so the kitten has to be resilient.

  • So far, so good!

My 3-month new kitty has thin, razor-sharp claws, and she can claw right through gloves! I was getting serious cuts on my hands and wrists, but the worst one was when she jumped up and caught on my lower leg and left a cut over an inch long, and quite deep. The blood flowed!! That's when I ordered the Soft Claws. I took her to the vet to have them applied, there's no way I could have done it by myself. I chose not to use the ones the vet carries because he couldn't assure me they were the same. He did say they usually lasted about two weeks, so maybe the Soft Claws are better. It has been just over a week since they were applied, no problems yet. I'm hoping they will stay on the estimated four weeks! They have been a life saver for me, and I'll continue to use them, have just reordered another set. By the way, the vet used the kitten size. Wish they came in that size only, although I'm saving the additional larger size that comes with them, hoping I can use them later on. It took one person to hold the kitty, and one to apply them, and she didn't fight them at all, didn't seem to bother her. They were very gentle and loving, which made me happy. Now, if I can just make her stop biting!! It took hours of letting her play in two rooms yesterday, and she finally curled up on me and slept! FIRST TIME! If I can just get through this kitty phase of constant playing, and biting, I'll be a thankful mommie. … more

Finally a good alternative to de-clawing. These might not stay on forever (but they stay on long enough for the cost) and they might be a pain to put on but, at least SOMEONE has come up with an alternative to declawing. I'll use these again!

  • Work Great And Kitten Safe

I have an 8 month old Sphynx cat who was doing serious damage to my hands and arms just playing. These have made all the difference! First I tried the small size but they were too wide so I ordered kitten size as they are thinner in width. Perfect fit! The glue is NOT superglue people, it is surgical grade and must be kept cool as in the fridge. My kitten plays hard like a puppy and these last him about 4 weeks tops. I also bathe him weekly with no problem, clean his nail beds above the caps too in his bath. I use the clear ones they are easier to see glue application and nail condition. Try them!

  • Saved my legs!

My kitten was so tiny and always wanted to be on my lap so she would try to jump but only make it to my knees (or if I was sitting, my thigh) where she would then try to climb my leg leaving her claw marks in my skin. A friend suggested the Soft Claws. They are easy to put on my kitten and don't hurt her. I am much happier not to have her claw marks on my legs and as a bonus no more kitten climbing the back of my couch. Wish I would have found them sooner!

Package says its for kittens as young as 3 months. The nails are actually too big for my going on 4 month old kitten. I still use them though he keeps loosing the pinky nails.

  • Had trouble keeping them on!

I think my kitten may be too small or we failed at glueing correctly, but we attempted to put these on him and he had them all off by the next day! He is a harmful scratcher so we will attempt to use these again when he grows a bit!
