FAQ

Why feed raw?

Simply said, raw food is served as nature intended—rich in naturally - occurring nutrients and enzymes. The ingredients in traditional pet foods, on the other hand, are altered by harsh processing—and the lost nutrients are replaced artificially with additives and sprayed - on synthetic vitamins and minerals. That said, there’s no question that kibble foods are convenient—but shelf - stable, grain - free, freeze - dried raw alternatives offer the same convenience without losing any of the taste, aroma and nutrition naturally found in fresh from the field food.

Why feed Sojos?

Sojos’ raw, shelf - stable foods enable pet parents to serve fresh, home - prepared meals in minutes—just by adding water. It's raw made easy. And for guilt - free treating, we make a variety of freeze - dried raw meat and oven - baked dog treats.

Are Sojos products raw?

Our food recipes include a combination of gently freeze - dried meat—and air - dried fruits & veggies. All ingredients in all of our foods are raw.Meat begins to cook at 115 degrees. But fruits and veggies have a higher cook - temp and can be dehydrated via an air - drying process, while maintaining the nutritious enzymes only found in raw ingredients. There can be a little confusion about the term ‘dehydrated’ because meat cannot be dehydrated and remain raw. But fruits and veggies can indeed be dehydrated and remain raw.

Is feeding a raw diet expensive?

Our food contains no fillers, so you feed less than what you would with traditional pet food. As a result, the price per day is about the same or less than most premium commercial pet foods. In the long run feeding your pets fresh, wholesome pet food can also save you money on vet bills.

Can dogs and cats really eat fruits and veggies?

While it’s true that dogs and cats are carnivores, bear in mind that when a carnivore eats another animal, they are also eating whatever that animal ate—often fruits and veggies. So, to get a truly complete diet, a variety of ingredients are critical. Not to mention, the superfood fruits and veggies included in our recipes pack a serious nutritional punch, providing health benefits for your pets.

Where are Sojos ingredients sourced?

Sojos products are made from scratch in Minneapolis, MN and we source as many ingredients as possible domestically—about 80%. Because of seasonality and the protein options included in our recipes, we do source elsewhere when necessary. For example, our venison comes from New Zealand and our goat comes from Australia. Simply put, they are ingredients that could just as easily end up in your pantry or on the shelves of your local co - op.

Why is there garlic in some of the products?

Many people believe that garlic is harmful to dogs, and in large, concentrated doses this can be true. However, in the proportions that we use, it is highly beneficial to heart health, acts as a natural flea repellant, an anti - oxidant and anti - bacterial ingredient. Just like with humans many things are healthy (and indeed necessary!) in small doses but potentially harmful in large, concentrated doses.

How do I make Sojos pet foods?

For our Complete recipes and Wild recipes, simply add water, soak and serve. For Sojos Pre - Mix recipes, simply add water, the protein of your choice, soak and serve.

What type of meat should I add to Sojos Pre - Mix recipes?

Look for an all - natural, USDA - approved raw protein to add to Sojos Pre - Mixes. The type of protein you choose depends on your dog’s individual nutritional needs and preferences. Your local butcher or grocery store is a great resource for meat recommendations.

Do I need to add extras, like meat or other foods or supplements?

Adding ingredients or supplements to our food recipes isn’t necessary, unless you’re feeding a Pre - Mix, in which case you should add the recommended amount of meat. Our Complete and Wild recipes are formulated to meet the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles and can be fed alone. As always, check with your holistic vet or nutritionist—especially if your dog has specific health requirements.

Do I need to add a vitamin or mineral supplement?

You don’t need to add anything to your pet’s meal (besides protein if you’re feeding a Pre - Mix recipe). Our foods include an all - natural blend of vitamins and minerals that provide all the nutrients your pet needs.

Are the amounts listed in the feeding guidelines per meal, or per day?

Our feeding guidelines recommend your dog’s daily portion size. So if you feed twice daily, simply divide the portion in half to determine how much you should feed per meal.

Does the feeding chart refer to dry Sojos or rehydrated Sojos? How much food will my dog’s serving size net once rehydrated?

Our feeding chart guidelines include measurements using dry Sojos. There's no way to get an accurate measurement once Sojos is rehydrated, because there are too many unpredictable variables that will affect the actual rehydrated volume. Our natural ingredients can vary slightly in size from 1 bag to the next. Not to mention the soak time, temperature of water, temperature of soak environment (fridge vs the counter), etc can all affect the rehydrated volume.

What temperature water should I add to dry Sojos?

Room temperature water is ideal. Do not add boiling water, as this will cook out the natural enzymes found in raw food.

How do I store Sojos food and treats?

All of our food recipes and freeze - dried meat treats should be stored in a cool, dry place. Do not store dry Sojos in the refrigerator.

Why is it important to soak Sojos?

Soaking improves digestibility. Cats and dogs have a strong, but short, digestive tract designed to quickly break down and absorb foods. Grains and veggies require more complex digestion than meats, fruit and other foods, so having them soak in water a minimum of 15 minutes is critical. You can also soak overnight in the fridge.

Can I refrigerate rehydrated Sojos?

Any leftover food should be treated like fresh food, covered and refrigerated or discarded. Sojos is best served fresh, within 24 hours within of prep.

Can I microwave rehydrated Sojos?

Do not microwave your dog’s rehydrated Sojos. This will cook the raw ingredients.

Can I blend rehydrated Sojos?

Sojos recipes include bite size, natural ingredient chunks. If your pup prefers a smoother blend, or has dental issues, feel free to blend once rehydrated.

How much food will my dog’s serving make once rehydrated?

Each meal will rehydrate a little differently depending on the food mix itself, the temperature of water you used, the amount of time you soaked, etc. So, there’s no way to pinpoint the exact volume once rehydrated.

How long can I expect a bag of Sojos mix to last?

An 8 lb bag of Sojos Complete contains 40 of dry food. The amount you feed your pup depends on several factors, including weight and activity level. But for an average sized dog, with an average activity level, an 8 lb bag of Sojos Complete will last roughly 1 month. Find our feeding charts here.

What’s the shelf - life of your products?

Sojos food products have a 18 - month shelf - life when stored in a cool, dry place. The “Best By” date is printed on the top corner of the back of your bag.

My bag is expired. Can I still feed it to my pet?

We cannot guarantee food or recommend you feed it to your pet if it’s past the expiration date.

    Suggestions

    By on

I have not yet used this food but am familiar with feeding the freeze dried raw with my ferrets...Just a suggestion to everyone , but reading the reviews concerning rubbery texture and spoiling...I would take the food,..run it through the food processor until its finely ground and THEN add the warm water...I would keep the food in the freezer if you are concerned about spoiling. ...and no...i am in no way affiliated with Sojo's.. :)

Not the right fit for my kitty

    By on

I really wanted to love this food. Sojos for dogs is fantastic, so I was hoping it would work with my cat. However, after gradually feeding her the food, she barely picks at it and her waste has been extra stinky ever since it's been the majority of her diet.

    Great Stuff!

    By on

I have a foster fail kitten who has had near constant tummy issues since I got him. I wanted to switch him to raw but was hesitant when he was having digestive issues. Finally I gave it a shot, he LOVES this stuff and his stools are finally normal! I add raw grinds (since my dog is on raw) so there's some variety in the proteins he eats but this is his primary food. This stuff is a life saver, but I would like to see more variety in proteins for their cat formulas. Dogs have all kinds of variety but they only have turkey for cats.

    too many veggies

    By on

bought this thinking it was just as good as a substitute for raw food diet but my cat did not like this. I feel like it had more dehydrated veggies in it than the actual meat? don't get me wrong, my cat ate it...just only ate around the veggies lol.

    Picky Eaters Beware

    By on

I REALLY REALLY wanted to love this product. Great ingredients, great food, and my cats LOVE primal nuggets so I thought switching it up would be fun. However, this is a bag full of large chunks that even when soaked overnight still maintain a hard, rubbery texture. My 2 cats wouldn't touch it, and my 8 foster kittens tried but just couldn't get through the chunks. Luckily I have 6 dogs so this won't go to waste, but it seems like the palatability is an issue with this product and should be something future buyers keep in mind when purchasing.

Cat will not eat this foold

    By on

My cat, who used to hunt outside, but has been an indoor cat for the last 7 years, will not eat this food. Even when rehydrated, it is rubbery. My cat will eat other brands of freeze dried cat food.

    Only for brave cats

    By on Top 250 Contributor

This is some weird stuff, with a very chunky texture. My cats stared at me like I was insane. It takes planning as well, since the food is "best" when rehydrated overnight (minimum 15 minutes). There are no unintelligible ingredients, which is a plus. I have liked Sojo products for my dogs, so guess who will end up eating this?!

    Spoiled before hydrating

    By on

My cat ate this food for a few meals. But then the food itself, not hydrated, spoiled in the bag. It left a horrid, rancid smell. I kept the bag in a plastic bin, because my cat always tears apart bags, and never have had anything like this happen with a freeze dried food. Not sure if I has a bad batch or something is off with the food itself. I liked the price, and my cat did eat it for a few meals right after the bag was opened. Perhaps it just needs to be refrigerated after opening. I would try this again, because the price is good and seems like it might be a good product but I don't want it to all go to waste again.
