Spironolactone Hydrochlorothiazide may be used in pets with congestive heart failure (CHF) who do not adequately respond to diuretics and ACE inhibitors (used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure), or who develop hypokalemia (low levels of potassium in blood) on other diuretics and are unwilling or unable to supplement with external potassium sources.
Please contact your veterinarian if you notice any of the following reactions: dehydration with excessive thirst and decreased urine production, or electrolyte imbalances, possibly with weakness, lethargy, restlessness, stumbling, dizziness, muscle pain or cramping, lack of energy, vomiting and diarrhea.
Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide tablets should not be used in pets with acute or severe kidney failure, severe renal insufficiency, significant impairment of renal excretory function, hypercalcemia (high calcium levels), hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), Addison’s disease, and in pets who are allergic to diuretics or to other sulfonamide-derived drugs.
Spironolactone Hydrochlorothiazide should not be used in pets with hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), Addison’s disease, kidney failure, severe renal failure or significant renal impairment. It should be used cautiously in animals with hepatic (liver) disease, but is often used to treat ascites (accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, which causes abdominal swelling).
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

Spironolactone and Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets are a diuretic, which means it helps the body get rid of excess fluid. It is used to treat congestive heart failure in dogs and cats. It is a prescription "water pill" that is also used to treat fluid in the abdomen. Spironolactone/HCTZ tablets are often prescribed when the pet does not respond to other diuretics.
These tablets are given by mouth. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.
Spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide are prescription diuretics (water pills). Diuretics are agents which increase the excretion of water in the urine, ridding the body of excess fluid.
Spironolactone/HCTZ will not cure a disease, but will help manage the symptoms. Spironolactone/HCTZ will start to have an effect within hours of being taken. The effect is short-lived, however, and the drug must consistently be given according to your veterinarian's directions to have the full effect.
Results may not be immediate and it can take several weeks to see improvement.
