Dogs not gaining weight and dry skin on Victor

By DogPro on Mar 15, 2018

I am a dog professional and I feed many dogs various diets at my kennel. I have fed Victor to 4-5 of dogs over a period of months. Various ages, two small breeds and two are larger active dogs. I have purchased (and fed) a total of 6 bags of Victor, including 2 40-lb bags of Nutra Pro, after the Ultra I am a dog professional and I feed many dogs various diets at my kennel. I have fed Victor to 4-5 of dogs over a period of months. Various ages, two small breeds and two are larger active dogs. I have purchased (and fed) a total of 6 bags of Victor, including 2 40-lb bags of Nutra Pro, after the Ultra Pro didn't yield good results, despite being one of the highest fat and protein foods. When I say the dogs didn't gain weight, I will point out that they all quickly and noticeably began to gain weight when switched to a different (but similar in ingredient) food brand. Just two weeks after switching to a random new food, the thinner dog had gained several pounds, and soon her coat wasn't as dry, and my puppy 7-month old puppy was finally growing. I found this odd, because these Victor formulas are fairly high in calories, or at least that's what the bag says. That is why I bought them. I also tried upping their feeding amount, obviously, but it didn't help. I have fed these dogs other foods in the past, as it's important to rotate foods for a healthy variety, and on Victor, as the weeks went by, none of them looked good-- teeth had more tartar, coats were somewhat dull, and especially on a black dog I could see a flaky dandruff, or dry skin, which she never had before. I am not sure why this food didn't do well for the dogs, but I am very concerned that the formula is not balanced. When I called Chewy, the rep said they haven't heard of these issues. Yet I have had several other dog trainers and breeders say they had problems with this food, too. Not just with one dog, with multiple dogs developing dry flaky skin and coat. The one good thing I will say about Victor is the dogs stool was always normal. With Ultra Pro, their stool was almost black (the food is dark in color), which I've never seen before. If consumers are judging a dog food by what comes out in waste, they will find Victor produces pretty solid stools. None of the dogs are picky eaters so that was not an issue with this food, it's palatable. … more
