30% Protein based on Calorie Needs!

By HappyPuppy on Jan 16, 2019

I'm so happy I've come across with Victor Senior dog food. It's not obvious how many grams of protein is going to end up in a food bowl when we actually feed our dogs as the guaranteed analysis are based on weight, not by caloric needs - Why does it matter? Well, let's say, Dog Food A is 500 kcal/cup I'm so happy I've come across with Victor Senior dog food. It's not obvious how many grams of protein is going to end up in a food bowl when we actually feed our dogs as the guaranteed analysis are based on weight, not by caloric needs - Why does it matter? Well, let's say, Dog Food A is 500 kcal/cup with 30% of min. crude protein and Dog Food B is 250 kcal/cup with 25% of min. crude protein. Let's say, a dog needs 1,000 kcal/day, and both foods weigh 8 oz/cup; then you'd have to feed 2 cups or 16 oz of Food A/day, and 4 cups or 32 oz of Food B. If you look at only the guaranteed analysis, Food A seems to have more protein, but as fed basis, Food A ends up containing only 4.8g of protein (16 oz x 30%) while Food B would supply 8.0g (32 x 25%)! This always annoyed me, so I actually took the time and did the calculation myself for Victor Senior dog food. Although the guaranteed analysis says min. 27% crude protein, it's only 370 kcal/cup, as a fed basis, it ends up feeding a lot more grams of protein with this food than other much more expensive foods. I have four senior dogs, so the cost is important factor. I just can't believe the quality of food Victor provides for the cost. I do rotation feeding, and this food definitely is going to be added to the list. … more

    My dog didn’t like it

By Gabriel on Dec 20, 2018

I have a Shih-Poo, 7 yrs old, who has never been a picky eater. He always eats whatever we put in front of him. My friend started feeding her dogs Victor brand because her feed store recommended it so I decided to change to it. Well, my dog Gabriel does not like this food. My friend started feeding her dogs Victor brand because her feed store recommended it so I decided to change to it. Well, my dog Gabriel does not like this food. He will take a bite and spit it out. He has never done that before. Only after telling him he either eats it or goes hungry he reluctantly eats it. I have already ordered what he use to eat which is Merrick Healthy Weight. I will NOT order Victor food again. … more
