    Victor Senior Dry Dog Food

My veterinarian recommended a lower protein dog food than the Wellness Core grain-free food we were using (32 grams protein). Our male Rhodesian Ridgeback (nine years old) is anything but fat. Our male Rhodesian Ridgeback (nine years old) is anything but fat. He is slim and all muscle. He was having a slight kidney problem and we were told that we needed a good dog food with less protein. Victor has about 22 grams of protein and Benson LOVES it! He seems to be totally satiated with two cupfuls of this food morning and evening. He loved it from the first day we tried it...very gradually at first. My husband and I are thrilled with Victor and we love the 40-lb. bag that lasts a month and is delivered to our front door. This is a premium dog food from a company that has been in business for over 50 years. Our four-old Cairn terrier, Bella, now wants to eat this food also. She attacks it each time we let her try it. She searches Benson's bowl for any bit he may have left...to no avail, I might add. We have given in to let her have the same food...Victor. They both love it! Everyone is happy! … more

Tasteless and a waste of $

My senior healthy dog eats any premium dry food regularly but she will not eat this at all. I bought it because it contains the largest amount of glucosamine available but turns out you would have to feed 30+ cups a day to get the recommended amount anyway. I gave some to neighbors for their dogs to try and same results so I will donate it. Wish Chewy had a refund or credit policy so I could easily buy another brand. … more

  • Dog doesn't love it, but it does its job

    By on

My shepherd started packing on the pounds as he approached his 7th birthday. I had been planning on switching him to a senior food, and this seemed like the perfect formula and a high quality food. It took awhile to find his correct portion size (what was recommended on the bag proved to be too much for him) and he doesn't eat it with as much gusto as his old food (but really, how much does anyone love diet food?), but it seems to be doing well for him and I have noticed some weight loss. I have noticed an increase in shedding, but I don't know how much that has to do with the food or if it is just age related. Also, you can't beat the price!

  • Good quality senior dog food option

    By on

Very good dog food product. She loves the taste. Only negative is I have notice her stools have more of an odor but a great product otherwise. My dog is a senior and also can't eat a chicken based food. This limits our options considerably to get a good quality food. Victor Senior food is a good solution.

  • Casey is not sure yet

    By on

Picked this because my 8 year old Vizsla needs less protein and it sounded like a good choice. He's not sure yet but the bag is going to get finished. I may have to add a topper or just leave it down. He can be a picky pill and thinks everything should be covered with meat. I have spoiled him.

  • GSD eats anything, Shepsky hates it

    By on

After doing a lot of research, this food seems to offer the best price/performance ratio for Glucosamine content. I find this to be beneficial for my 6yr old GSD as he doesn't have the best hips. My 1yr old Shepsky on the other hand seems very disinterested in eating after mixing some of this food in with his meal. My goal is to find a food that both dogs will agree on for simpliciy. So far the Shepsky likes the Victor Select Active Dog & Puppy. In the future i may try the Victor Grain Free Hero to see if that strikes a balance between Glucosamine and taste. The 6yr old GSD will eat anything though!

  • Wish my dog liked the taste more

    By on

My 7 year old shepherd has been on this for about two months now. He has always been a picky eater, and making this switch wasn't the easiest thing... he didn't necessarily refuse to eat it, but it took some time before he ever actually finished a bowl. Even now, he doesn't do so very enthusiastically and sometimes still leaves food in the bowl. That being said, I have noticed he's slimmed down a bit. I don't notice any difference in his coat or joints, positive or negative. All in all, it seems to be doing it's job well enough.

  • This is a quality food and is worth the cost

    By on

I'm still waiting to see if this senior food will help keep extra weight off my older Jack Russell Terrier. She is slowing down just a bit and gains too much weight on the active formula that everyone else is on.

  • Learning to like it

My 2 girls 12 years old, picky eaters! They seem to be starting to like it more. Been on wellness core reduced fat dog food for years, getting to expensive for us seniors! I like the ingredients and the reviews I've read......

  • No problem with the switch!

    By on

I bought this food because my 3 year old rescue has become overweight in the past couple years. We already use Victor and felt with it's good reputation there would be no issues switching over. It has been an easy switch no stomach issues, no notice that there was any distress to him.

  • Happy switch to Victor Senior Weight Dog Food

    By on

Was using Nutri Source weight management dog food. They are stopping doing biz with Chewy. I love Chewy, so had to find another dog food -- which can be tricky as we all know. Talked it over with Chewy, and settled on Victor senior weight. Mixed old and new together (1/2 of each) and happy to say my dog is doing well with the change. Even saved a bit as Victor is larger bag for same price. I love the way Chewy handles their business in such a professional manner.

  • It's been a good, solid food

It is kind of unfair to review food sometimes. People look for different things in their food. But here goes. This is a GOOD food from an EXCELLENT company. They have never had a recall and it is family owned in Texas, and not corporate. I rank this company up there with Fromm as far as quality. All my dogs like the taste of their foods...no problems on that end either. My dog was not losing weight on Taste of the Wild (which is corporate owned and have had several recalls), I put her on this and she slowly and steadily lost the weight she needed to over many months. Her coat was shiny, she was healthy, energetic, her stools were good- all on a portion size that didn't leave her feeling It is kind of unfair to review food sometimes. I would highly recommend this for weight control and it has glucosamine for aging joints...a big plus. I am going to TRY switching off of this food for one reason...the nutrient proportions- protein/fat/carbs....are not what I'd personally prefer if I have a choice. I prefer a more ancestral level of these nutrients when possible. So I'm going to try the Ultra Pro (which DOES have close to ancestral levels of these nutrients) and see if I can keep her weight reasonable on that now that I have it down to sane levels without cutting back her ration so hard that one is worried if she is receiving proper levels of nutrients. If not...we'll be back to this because she did really well on it and it's a good solid food. … more
