Now have terrible chemical smell (not in the past)
I purchased three bags of this product every month, for two years. This month and last month, 6 bags in total, and 2 of them have extremely strong chemical smell — definitely not the regular smell of this product, definitely not made to be fed as cat food, definitely something is wrong. Please, change the quality, but honestly I won’t purchase this again since I see a risk here.
Come on Vital.
What is going on with the variation of texture/bones with this freeze dried product? My cats have been eating this for two years, and i, like others, have been putting plenty of money in their pockets and all were asking for is patties that arent hard as a rock, only containing blood and bone chunks. there is no “muscle” no true meat to these anymore, and more than half the time it’s just condensed dried blood and huge chunks of sharp bone. I know. Cats eat bone in the wild. Its why we are buying it, my concern is the AMOUNT of *sharp* bones in each patty. its quite alarming, almost 3-4 tablespoons of large bone hunks in 1 patty, and a serving of almost 3 patties a day? come on guys. We fill your pockets, and the least you can do is make. your product. consistent. READ OUR COMMENTS AND OUR EMAILS! Once in a blue moon (what i used to get) I’ll receive an evenly dispensed bag without the texture of rock and concrete. RARELY, and this is the texture it used to be. Might just move on to another raw brand and let go of this loyalty to this smaller company. Stella and Chewys is much too expensive but has been my alternative from these disappointing bags.
Used to love
I loved this item and it was good, but just like another reviewer it seems the quality has gone down. I just had to throw out 8 bags of these due to them being rock solid. They are usually pretty soft and easy to crumble up, but these last two orders it seems somethings changed. They all had 2023 expiration dates and weren't opened so I don't know what the issue is, but I'm probably going to look for another food because they are expensive and I can't take hit or miss especially when I buy them on a regular basis so I have plenty in stock. Previously I would have rated them 4 or 5 stars, but I can't do that after having this many bags be bad.
Same as other reviews - cats hate now
I purchased a bag of the chicken a few weeks ago and the whole thing is going to waste - cats sniff and walk away. Wonder what changed?
used to be good
My cats used to love this food and I liked it for them. I’d have given it 5 stars until recently. The last few bags have been all tendons and bones and are nearly inedible. I’m thinking of contacting the manufacturer and hoping to try it again but for now I won’t order it again.
moldy bags of food
cats and I could both smell the mold and they refused Three out of Four bags no good.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
I have a senior cat (16 years old), and she has feline diabetes. Before giving her insulin injections I give her a little bit of the chicken patty (making sure she has something in her stomach to absorb the insulin). She loves its!!
The chicken Patties are the least favorite flavor for my cats out of all of VE’s protein choices. It (amongst other proteins) all contains small sharp bones so do be careful when crumbling they apart.
Foster and resident approved
My foster kittens love this stuff as well as one of my newer resident kittens. One patty does the trick for those hungry, growing kitties
new formula- does it still include bone?!
Very disappointed in VE for changing their formula, and disappointed with Chewy as well for not updating the information on their site. This brand has been my go-to for almost a year, if not more. VE changed their formula with no explanation to their customers, and now the packaging no longer states whether it includes ground bone. I made another small purchase for now because I am having a hard time finding anything comparable to the original VE formula in freeze-dried form, but once I do I will likely no longer purchase VE. It’s a shame, I was recommending them to everyone I know and now I don’t feel confident doing so or even feeding VE to my cats with the synthetic mineral complexes added. I can only assume their meat is no longer high quality and they had to change to something of lesser quality, meaning they now have to add the mineral complexes. Tip: if you want to see the updated ingredient information, click on the picture of the back of the package and enlarge it. THAT is what you are now getting, NOT the ingredients Chewy states, at least until they update their site. I was previously very confident in Chewy and Vital Essentials. Sigh... I guess all good things come to an end.
