So many big pieces of bone it's inedible
Had very good luck with the pork flavor and since my cat likes duck already I figured we'd get this to try. Complete waste at the least since it would probably kill my cat. The size of chunks of bone are MUCH bigger than any of her teeth, they're jagged, there's a lot of them to the point picking out the big pieces just isn't enough. I mean they're the size of baby human teeth in some cases and we only did 2.5 patties! Also if you tried the other and it smelled a certain way, this will be the same. With no bone listed on the bag but it's clearly in there I'm not surprised that duck and pork smell almost identical... This company is a joke (vital cat) as well. For a 12 lb cat they say 2 patties and that's all they need to eat as this isn't a supplement only or anything. 2 patties is less than the calorie in one 3.5oz core wellness can and 25 less than a single can of Purina DM canned food. Also have tried the nibs and can say that dried beans rehydrate faster and more complete. 1\5 is the lowest I can go but this stuff shouldn't be on the market until they up their qc and have ingredients verified. Stella and Chewy is a great product in comparison and superior in every way. My picky diabetic senior cat who was losing weight has started to put it on again :) :)
Saved my cat
These are a godsend. My poor cat came down with horrible food allergies and we think IBS. She began throwing up once a night on her usual food. Lost 45% of her body weight. She has never been a picky eater. I could switch her to different brands, proteins, raw, wet, kibble she always ate. And then she stopped eating. Managed to find the Blue Essentials Duck and Potato wet food which she tolerated (ignored the kibble version though). Finally tried these and managed to eat 12 bowls of food in 24 hours (I'm tired, but also happy). She ate these even while fighting through a nasty URI when she wouldn't even look at anything else. She's begging me for food again right now. I hope she's back up to her normal weight soon...with as much as she's eating, it probably won't be long!
Chewy was kind enough to send a replacement when I reported that the batch in my bag was super dry/harder than usual. Unfortunately the replacement was from the same batch/expiration date. The bags I've had before were a bit more moist and easier to crumble. I like to do this to pick out any larger hard/sharp pieces. Going to wait it out before trying this again.
A resounding NO from the Gang of Four
I got this for my sensitive kitty as I was looking for some backup food in case I couldn’t get duck duck go but she wanted nothing to do with even a tiny bite offered. The others generally don’t eat the freeze dried raw stuff, so I passed this on to a feral cat coalition friend.
great for sensitive tummies!
While Little Miss Picky won’t touch these, our younger boy goes crazy for them. He goes into wild cat mode when we serve them. He had horrible gas before, and this food seems to be exactly what his digestive system wanted.
Hey you reading this!
They ground these patties finer! No more nickel-sized chunks of stuff and sharp bone pieces! Especially appreciated by my girl with no teeth. THANK YOU VITAL ESSENTIALS!
Hard bits of bone and tendons
We have purchased this Vital Cat duck previously and our picky cat seemed to like it so I purchased again. This recent bag though seems a different meat quality and has many small round hard bone bits and also long thin tendon like pieces. Cat would not touch it. This one was reported to Chewy who nicely refunded promptly.
Quite a few bits of bones
I’m certain the rabbit version of this freeze dried food saved my cat and my sanity so we were excited to start trying other versions. Duck seemed to be the logical next choice given our cat’s allergies. And he loves it, probably more than the rabbit. The bowl is licked clean each time. However we did notice that when preparing the duck version there are quite a few bits of sharp bones and such. Which given what I know about ducks and eaten duck before, duck is just a naturally boney meat. We just make sure to pick it out for the cats. Overall, for health and taste this is great. Prep is a bit more tedious but still worth it.
These STINK! And that's good!
I got these for my fancy little boys to enjoy as an occasional treat crumbled over their kibble. They went nuts over them as soon as I opened up the bag. I was less thrilled, because these are extremely, incredibly stinky. I use gloves to crumble them up inside a sandwich bag, and I still have to wash my hands thoroughly to get the stink off. That was very important recently, when it was so hot, my poor kitties didn't want to eat for a couple of days. They were getting lethargic, and I was getting worried. I crumbled up a patty, just to see if they were interested. As soon as they smelled it, they dove on top of their food for the first time in days and became their old selves in no time! If you have a kitty who is having a hard time eating, consider feeding them this stinky food. It grabs their attention and holds it, and it makes their fur glossy and soft!
My cats say no way!
My cats love duck in other foods, but absolutely would not touch this. Took a sniff and walked away. I rehydrated them as they are used to extra moisture in their food. Gave them a couple hours and none of them would go back to it. I put the bowls outside for the strays but they wouldn't eat it either. I am sure it is not the quality of the food, but it seems l wasted my time and money on this.
