Minnows are a hit with my kitty!

By Guardian on Jan 6, 2018

I wasn't sure my cat would like these; he surprises me sometimes. So far he has liked all the products I've ordered by VitalCat. He's tried the chicken mini nibs, the turkey patties, and these minnows and goes crazy for them equally. My cat will not touch most treats. He's tried the chicken mini nibs, the turkey patties, and these minnows and goes crazy for them equally. My cat will not touch most treats. He loves hunting and eating bugs and I think these happen to be fairly similar in texture. Crunchy and light! At first he didn't realize the first minnow was something to eat, and kind of batted at it. He was starting to walk away, uninterested, when the smell seemed to suddenly catch his attention, and he snapped back over to devour it. That being said, the odor is not strong since the fish are dry. They keep him busy for some time, too. … more

One Kitty Likes, the Other Won't Touch

By Kenzie on Dec 30, 2017

I've been trying different "healthy" treats for my two kitties whenever I have to order their cat food to replace their old favorite Temptations and these were their 4th taste test. My big boy Kit Kat ate them just fine, but he pretty much eats anything you put in front of him. My big boy Kit Kat ate them just fine, but he pretty much eats anything you put in front of him. On the other hand, my picky cat Milo refused to eat these at all. They are a little creepy since they are literally just freeze-dried fish but that's also what's nice about them, they're definitely not some slaughterhouse meat, it's a fish that you can visually see. It was 50/50 for my boys but one of them is very finicky. … more

  • Wish my cat liked it

I was really excited about these, but my cat who usually isn't at all fussy actually hated these. Offered them to a few of my friends' cats, and only 1 out of 4 would eat them. They seem like a great product, but just didn't work out.

  • One out of 3

Unfortunately only one out of my 3 cats will eat these. I've tried rehydrating them still no luck. My yellow lab happily cleans up what they walk away from though.

  • My cats did not like these at all!

I got kind of a 'meh' reaction from them. Now I'm stuck with 2 pouches of these and no kitties that like them

  • Superior Quality but Questionable Taste

After a great deal of thinking, I had to give this treat a paw down. It is a great idea for a unique and nutritious treat, but I cannot recommend it. I fed them to my dogs first, before trying them on the cats. The dogs loved them. Having tried one myself, I found that there is a very bitter aftertaste, which may explain why some cats will not eat these. Since my dogs "inhale" much of their food, and these minnows are small enough for this, the dogs may not have noticed the bitterness. I do not know if minnows are naturally this bitter, if the bitterness is a consequence of the food that they eat, or if it is a consequence of the freeze drying process. I just do not know. What I do know is that I will be happy to try Vital Essentials' other treats but I will not purchase the minnows again. The minnows are whole and range from small to large. They are very clean and there is no fish odor. There are quite a few in even a half-ounce bag. This bag lasted most of a week for my medium- and large-sized dogs #two#, eating two to three twice per day. The nutritional analysis is awesome: 60% protein and 5% fat. I think that Vital Essentials is an excellent manufacturer of dog food and treats, but this one misses the mark for me. … more
