  • The current BEST training treat at dog school!

    By on Top 250 Contributor

When one of my fellow instructors at training school, came back from a dog show with a bag of Minnows, we were all skeptical....til we saw how enthusiastic our pups became when they got a MINNOW reward, versus some other high value, human food as treats (think hot dog bits, string cheese, leftover chicken from dinner....). In our foundation classes, students all get a fun "homework" assignment, to figure out before their next class, exactly what sorts of treats your dog finds VERY rewarding - then, bring a small amount of the top 3 to next week's class, when the pups start learning new things. When the Minnows first arrived at school, she shared them with the whole class, and I was astonished When one of my fellow instructors at training school, came back from a dog show with a bag of Minnows, we were all skeptical....til we saw how enthusiastic our pups became when they got a MINNOW reward, versus some other high value, human food as treats (think hot dog bits, string cheese, leftover chicken from dinner....). In our foundation classes, students all get a fun "homework" assignment, to figure out before their next class, exactly what sorts of treats your dog finds VERY rewarding - then, bring a small amount of the top 3 to next week's class, when the pups start learning new things. When the Minnows first arrived at school, she shared them with the whole class, and I was astonished how well these were accepted by all kinds of dogs. Yes, it is a whole fish. A whole, dry fish that is somewhat brittle, so you may find yourself holding half a fish, or just a little fish head. No matter - they are the perfect, high value treat for when your dog does something REALLY well....and when there's only crumbs left in the bag, you can sprinkle them as a meal topper, and your dog will think he just did something spectacular! // Since dogs tend to enjoy things with strong smells (and flavors, too), these make an excellent, natural treat, as they have no preservatives other than being very, very dry. For training classses, we tell students to put a bunch into a small plastic leftovers container rather than directly into a clothing pocket (if you wash some minnows in a pocket by accident, younwill need to re-wash the entire load of clothing!). Using several items that your dog perceives as high value rewards, will help reinforce the behaviors you wish him to learn, with a VERY positive reinforcement. Best of all, dogs can eat practically an entire bag, and not develop a stomach problem like the loose poop that sometimes follows using high fat hot dogs, or liver treats. Minnows are now one of the most popular training treats being used in classes. My two Aussies give Minnows, all eight paws up! … more

  • Dog love these delicious treats

I add these to my dogs food qsbtreat toppers. They do not make the best training treats as they are very delicate and sometimes break in your hand, not to mention they are literally whole minnows and it feels kinda weird to me to hold them. That being said my dogs totally love them as food toppers and I love being able to feed them healthy food they enjoy.

  • Everyone loves these!

I bought these for my Catahoula leopard dog and she was crazy for them immediately! The smell caught the interest of my 3 cats who are also now in love with them! I break them into a few pieces for the cats and they have no trouble with them. They dont smell too fishy, in my opinion, but it was a bit weird at first breaking whole fish in half. I'm glad I can have 1 healthy treat that pleases everyone.

  • minnow Monday is everyday

My yorkie loves his daily minnow. It took him a bit to understand he could chew them instead of just licking them but now that he's figured it out, they disappear in about two seconds. Awesome way to make sure he gets some fish oils and omega 3 fatty acids in his diet.

  • Cat loves them

Scooter loves these. The only difference I see in the dog and cat minnow treats is the price, and the dog treats had a surprise giant minnow included in the first bag we got. Scooter loved eating the big fish.

  • Disgusting But They Love 'Em

    By on

So... freeze dried minnows. WHOLE minnows. I can barely stand to touch them but my dogs Hank & Harper LOVE them. Not just like them. LOVE them. I've never had another treat where both dogs immediately sit and start wagging their tail in anticipation the minute they even see the package. So... freeze dried minnows are now a staple in our home.

  • Dogs were NOT a fan

My dogs (2 Danes & a Yorkie Poo) all hated these treats. They would not go anywhere near them, and my Yorkie Poo loves anything that smells. Idk why, but they just hated these treats. :( Wasted money

  • It's okay, my dog doesn't really like them.

I wanted my boy to like them but he doesn't, but he will still eat some. I like the fact that they are whole real treats unlike most dog treats though and most comments seem positive on here.

  • Dogs did not like them.

I thought my Bull Terriers would really go for these— wanted to use them as bait in the show ring. NO WAY. They spit ‘em out without even disturbing their scales...

  • Kitten LOVES these

My kitten just loves these tiny fish. My dogs to too, but they are so small and such a small amount in the bag, I am using them as a treat for the kitten.
