Questions & Answers

According to the feeding chart my 16-lb Himalayan should eat a cup of this per serving. Assuming two servings a day, that means this isn't even a full day's food for one cat? The price has me doubting if that could be true.
Answer by ChewyOct 25, 2017
The recommended daily feeding amount for a 16-pound cat is 8 ounces.

Can you explain why there isn't added taurine in this particular food? We've been giving our cats Vita Essentials freeze dried rabbit bites for years (their fave treat) and want to be sure this would be a well-rounded diet containing everything they'd need in their diet.
Answer by ChewyJun 03, 2018
This product doesn't have added synthetic vitamins to the formula, so the taurine is naturally occurring. This formula is a complete and balanced diet, containing 0.22% taurine on a dry matter basis.

How many cups are in a bag?
Answer by ChewyJan 21, 2019
There are 6 1-cup servings in the 12-ounce bag.

What is the phosphorus content of this product
Answer by ChewyApr 26, 2019
The phosphorus content of this food is approximately 1.9% on a dry matter basis.

Hard as rocks

Our cats love the VitalCat Rabbit dinner patties, and since the ingredients of the dinner patties and the mini nibs are exactly the same, I thought it couldn't hurt trying these. Just a smaller version, I thought. I was so wrong. The mini nibs resemble little rocks! Our youngest cat refused to eat them. Our oldest tried, but did end up with a broken tooth four days later (not 100% sure if it is correlated, but it seems so). It should be mentioned in the product description that these "nibs" are harder than kibble. They are also very big for cats. I tried breaking them in half, but that's almost impossible. Trying to soften them in warm water also didn't work. We will stick with the soft dinner patties from now on. :)

Something is different

My cat used to love these rabbit nibs. The last bag we received looked different. The color is so dark, it is almost black. I observed that it was difficult for my cat to chew through them. Why did Vital Essentials change things up? These are OK (2 stars)… no longer a 5 star product. I would not recommend this to others unless VE switches back to the original formula.

Something is different!

My cat used love these. The last bag we received were so dark, almost black color. I observed my cat having a difficult time chewing these rabbit nibs. Why did Vital Essentials change the formula? This product went from 5 stars to 2 stars… it is just OK. I wouldn’t recommend this to others until VE switches back to the original recipe.

These are the best!

Both of my cats love the Rabbit and the Turkey mini nibs! They’ve been a huge hit in my house and will be a permanent fixture in the kitty cupboard! We look forward to trying other flavors!

Happy Maine Coons

So far my picky Maine Coons love it! I use as a topper to Instinct Rabbit cups. Happy to have an option that doesn’t include chicken since one of mine is sensitive to chicken.

recently noticed VE changed recipe ingredients!

I have been using this food for 3 years .. my cat seemed to have some food allergies/intolerances from when I adopted her. This brand was PERFECT for her and she became so much healthier as this was the only brand I found that had no artificial ingredients in original recipe. The original ingredients of the pure rabbit freeze dried food had also raw goats milk. BUT LATELY the brand has changed their packaging indicating a new look, but as I looked closer because it seems my cat having some problems lately that I cannot pin point what its from.. the brand has removed the raw goats milk from their recipe and added vitamin like minerals supplements to the raw food. I'm asking anyone about reporting their findings if anyone has notice changes in their pet after these new ingredients? I'd rather have my pet eat all natural meat and nothing more but the company has started adding supplements and it would be better to have kept the original recipe in my view because that is REASON we by raw food as the meat from raw has everything that the felines need in natural form/ their natural instinct habitat and nothing extra should be required?.. and this brand had the least amount of additives, but now I'm concerned. I am still testing to see if these ingredient changes are having any adverse effect, as this is one of her only staple foods that she relies on.

Raise by $8?!?! Ok for IBD, but needs mixing with VE rabbit patties for dogs!

Worth the price, as this and VE freeze-dried patties for dogs (which I grind up) is all my IBD kitty can eat. With each serving of nibs, I mix in warm water and a tbsp or so of the VE freeze dried rabbit mini patties for dogs (pulverized in my blender) - this has kept his tummy upsets at bay along with various herbs and prednisolone. The nibs alone cause loose stool, but not mixed with the dog food ground up (there is no interest in the VE freeze dried dog patties alone, and they have big bits of bone, which is why I grind the patties). If my cat WOULD eat just the patties, I'd go with only patties. I feel the steep and sudden raise in price is atrocious though. I've literally tried everything. and this is all that works, so it's worth it, I save on vet bills, and I feel good about buying it and supporting this small company. I just wish the price didn't go up by like 20% overnight. At the same time, GRATEFUL this exists. Can I suggest an herbal product or two? There are many I use that aren't on Chewy, but Wapiti GI Upset, available on Chewy, has been helpful. I also use Life Gold available on Chewy.. and others :) ^_^

My cats wont touch it!

A huge waste of money. $42.00 with shipping and none of the cats will touch it. The mini nibs are huge! We had to try to crush them because they are as hard as rocks and one of my rescue cats only has about 1/2 of his teeth. They seriously tried to bury the food. None of the cats will touch it.
