It's the best out there for the price

You will not get that level of tracking from these kinds of GPS collars, but the Whistle is better than its competitors because you can adjust it to track location once a minute. I think there are $500+ GPS collars that hunters use for tracking their dogs in real time, but they're big clunky expensive things, so the Whistle is what I've stuck with. I only found out it wasn't constantly location tracking after I ordered the collar, that information is hard to find before you buy the device. My dog can cover a lot of distance in a minute, so that only gives me an approximate location for her, but the competitor only logs location about every 5 minutes, and only lasts about 4 hours once it's tracking your dog. The whistle lasts 1-2 days in the once-per-minute tracking mode, and 5 days or more in the once-per-6 minute tracking mode. That is the best battery life I've seen on the market. The app is also substantially more user friendly than the competitor (although I had to pick a breed for her to use the app and since she's a mix of more than 8 dog breeds and "mixed" or "Texas swamp rat" is not an option, I just googled "brindle dogs" and picked the one that looks most like her). I don't really care about activity monitoring (I live in an apartment, I know exactly how active my dog is), however the activity monitoring is more accurate in whistle compared to others. It differentiates between play and running and it doesn't log activity when she's not active (seems silly, but the competitor logs activity while the device is sitting on a shelf). It gives you badges and achievements when you hit certain activity milestones, so I guess that can help if you want an app to encourage you to increase your dog's activity. My creature comes over and starts smacking me in the head until I take her out to run, so I have plenty of encouragement without the app. The device is also water and dust proof. My dog swims and splashes and bathes like a duck in stagnant ponds and then rolls in tall grass and sand (her version of a spa treatment I guess?), and the whistle has withstood that. The Tile I have with the same rating for waterproofing did not survive her. … more

Works...but not as well as advertised

The Whistle 3 is a tracker but it only sends a signal at a minimum of three-minute intervals. An animal can go a long distance in 3 minutes. There is a button on the app to refresh but it only spins for a while. I would have even been ok with that however at one point it wouldn't regularly ID its location. For example, on a 1 hour walk the map would only show 1 location along the way. It even got to the point where it labeled a car trip as a multi-hour walk. Customer service is pleasant however they are only allowed to offer 1 replacement unit for each account. Considering the fact that I had a problem with my original device and it's replacement both within 5-6 months of ownership, I wouldn't expect the Whistle 3 to be a device that lasts for a while. Customer support offered me a 20% discount to obtain a second replacement. That's $180 for two years of service plus subscription. … more
