I don't know if my dog is mixed or purebred. That's why I want a DNA kit. Why do I have to choose either mixed breed, purebred, or designer?
Answer by ChewySep 17, 2018
This test does not required for you to pre- select your dogs breed. Simply swab and mail in and they will provide the results for you.

I have a rescue. Will this test let me know what is his mixed breeds for example15% Terrier,20% Lab or will it just say, mixed breed
Answer by ChewySep 27, 2019
This DNA kit will provide you with an easy-to-understand breed percentage pie chart outlining the breeds or breed groups found in your dog's ancestry.

Does this test only pick up traces of purebred breeds? Like if my dog is mixed and her parents and grandparents are all mixed, will the whole test come back just as "mixed breed"?
Answer by ChewyNov 27, 2018
Not only does the computer analyze a dog's DNA for the ancestral breeds and their likely proportions in the dog's ancestry, but it also models which side of the dog's tree each breed likely belongs to (bearing in mind, we cannot ascertain which side is the mother, and which side is the father.) It is important to note that there may be ancestors who were mixed beyond the third generation; these ancestors will show as "Breed Groups" on the ancestral tree. In the case of ancestors who were too mixed to possess any recently pure breeds, we can still be fairly certain about the breed groups that are present there. Those breed groups can be seen on the "Breed Groups" page of your report.

What happens to the DNA after the results are provided to me? Are they owned by a company who can then do whatever they please with that DNA?
Answer by ChewyJan 18, 2018
All DNA test samples are processed by a proprietary computer algorithm. The complex statistical algorithm scans the 1,800 genetic markers collected and looks for matches to breed signatures. The computer then provides a complex numerical score for each breed (how good the match to the breed was at each marker) as well as a prediction of the relative amount of each breed detected. It then selects the single best combination of breeds and relative amounts of breeds detected that best match the tested DNA sample from this comparison with the extensive database of purebred dog breed signatures. The breed database of 250+ breed, types and varieties are represented in more than 12,000 samples and was developed using genetic markers from American Kennel Club (AKC) breeds and some breeds from the Kennel Club in the UK.

Simple and Informative!

I had wanted to do a DNA test for a while but never did. With a serious cancer diagnosis I wanted to test my dog before his time was up. Shipped and arrived fast. It only took 10 days from the time Wisdom Panel received the sample to when they posted results. We knew what our dog was mixed with (Pit and Catahoula) though we didn't know exact percentages. Wisdom Panel told us exactly what he was (what we knew he was) and even told us some extra breeds (small percentages) which was interesting! I have since got 2 more puppies and plan on getting them both the essential dna test. I would recommend this to anyone!

Very Accurate Results

I was worried based on the reviews but I am very happy I did this test on my dogs, after getting the results. I have an old dog that showed up ten years ago as a stray. I always was curious as to what she was. She looks like a giant Pom but acts like a herding dog so I thought corgi. After getting the results it made all the sense in the world, 38% mini american shepherd, 20% chow, 19% australian shepherd (and then several others). It also detected MDR1 medication sensitivity. After looking into that, I think that is where her seizures come from. Over the years, I have felt that medicine was causing it. I stopped flea meds and it made a huge difference. Just crazy that the test picked up on this. I got the test primarily for a new puppy that I rescued from a local shelter. Turns out, he is nearly a pure bred (American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier). Very cool test. (I did not submit pictures of my dogs because I was worried it may influence the results.) I would do this again.

AKC German Shepherd??

I was sold a supposed AKC German Shepherd but after 4 months she looks nothing like one. This test is highly rated and Chewy had it at a price way lower than other sites. We did the test and mailed it back. It was 4 days later when we got an email telling us they had her samples and would be working on the samples and would be in touch in 2 to 3 weeks. We are anxious to see what the test tells us. Thanks Chewy for the highest rated test at the lowest price

DNA Kit

Got the kit quickly. Directions are easy to understand, simple to use, then simply send back. We have not gotten the results yet though. Says it will take 2 - 3 weeks. Gave 4 stars b/c we do not have anything to compare it to.

DNA Test for Dogs

Just got the results. The taking of Buddy's DNA was easy and easy to send in. The results came sooner than expected. I am glad I found out about the mixture of breeds in Buddy's family history.

Inaccurate

This test is not accurate. My dog is not 100% Shiba Inu. We got him as a mini husky and saw his siblings and parents. He’s the only one that’s cream color, but his siblings were white and gray husky colors. My dog’s 1 eye is blue and he’s white and cream. He’s bigger in size a bit than a Shiba. He could be a mix of several breeds and that’s what we wanted to find out. But this test just showed us 100% Shiba Inu and his whole family line as Shibas….

DNA test

The vet's quote for my dog's DNA test was high. I turned to Chewy for a quote, and to my delight, I saved 44%! The kit arrived on the second day with instructions so simple I mailed it to the lab on the third day.

Wisdom Breed Discovery - Awesome Purchase!

We just adopted a rescue pup and curious about her breed, we completed the Wisdom Breed Discovery kit. Getting the swab sample was tricky as she was not very cooperative (it fell on the ground during the process). Apparently the lab was able to overcome whatever contamination occurred and we received our results in 2 weeks. I believe the accuracy is true as the results seem quite relatable to her looks and behavior. Highly recommend Breed Discovery kit. It provided a lot of data as well as some close and extended relatives.

Does not give you breed info.

It did not give me specific breed mix only what group (sporting, etc). I had to buy another brand and got what I needed. This was a waste of my money.
