PLEASE READ: Real Grapevine NOT Artificial
PLEASE READ…..This is REAL sandblasted grapevine. I saw one of the questions that asked if it was real grapevine. An employee answered that it was not and gave some crazy answer about it being made or carved from sand. Lol. Again, I repeat: This is REAL SANDBLASTED GRAPEVINE. Zoo Med does NOT sell artificial grapevine. Also, the MEDIUM is much smaller than the measurements listed. The medium is approximately 12”, but can be up to 16”. I hope this helps reduce the confusion so you can be satisfied with the product you purchase.
Would not recommend for Higher Humidity Tanks, Grew Mold FAST
I put this in my crested gecko tank and within a WEEK probably not even that it started growing mold ALL over the branch. I don’t want anything bad to happen to my little guy so I was quick to remove it. For something that’s supposed to be good for something like this it just did NOT hold up well at all.
Moldy
Shape didn’t look like the picture because it’s real but that ended up being okay because it still fit in the enclosure and looks cool. Unfortunately it grew mold a few weeks after getting it (and annoyingly after it was already screwed into the enclosure). We had to detach it and clean it. If you get this you should make sure it’s treated BEFORE installing it in case it grows mold!!
Good size, dangerously spiky
I agree with the reviewer who posted that hours of sanding are required to make the grapevine useable for reptiles. A bird that can perch on it will be fine with it as is, but any creature who drags a belly on or over it risks injury. There are many spiky points and snags. Even the large ends are very rough and splintery.
Not sanded well enough for snakes
For snakes, not as smooth as I would have hoped. I ended up using sandpaper to shave down several splinters and hard-cut knots in the wood so my ball python could safely climb all over this. Because at first, we found a couple new dings in her scales that were left from the branch. So, if you buy this for your snakes, expect about 4 hours of sanding by hand. But once we sanded it down, my snake loves it, and its a great addition to her terrarium. I just think you can find better, smoother, safer options for snakes, especially for the price.
Advertising incorrect
The description of this wood for medium size says the dimensions are 23 inches long. What I received was about 11 inches or so long. The tag says "medium 12 inches" so the size wouldn't be an issue if the advertised sized was accurate. I would not of bought this item had the size listed been the 12 inches the tag says. The wood itself is fine quality, just not what I was under the impression I was ordering. Tried to add a picture but the app wouldn't allow it for some reason.
Better than expected!
I was very pleased with the size of the XL grapevine perch I received for my Macaw. It was 32"long. Varying widths and gnarly knots to chew on. This is natural sand blasted wood, not artificial. This particular piece can lie perfectly steady on a table flipped onto two different sides and not wobble. It has a nicely sawed off end that takes into account the angle of the cut so that the branch can be mounted at the correct angle on your parrots cage. (No stainless steel mounting hardware is included) use some from your old perches. This branch can also be used to make a nice top perch on a playstand or hang it as a swing perch. It's beautiful and well priced at $21.99. I couldn't have picked a better branch! It's like I chose my own. I told several macaw friends about this item.
Be Careful ours grew mold…. and fast
So we’ve LOVED everything we ordered from Chewy for our Blue Iguana. However with this item it actually molded horribly to the point it was toxic and had we not been deep cleaners often we would have never seen it bc she used it as a hiding nesting area… More of a warning to people and not necessarily a don’t order.. if your using in a humid tropical enclosure keep close watch for rapid and severe mold growth.
Not As Expected
The picture for the medium size is not correct. What I received is more similar to the large size in shape. I ordered the medium size specifically because of the shape depicted on the website. I'm extremely disappointed as this is not wide enough for my uromastyx as the picture led me to believe.
Great for hamsters
Ordered a few of these for my hamsters. They provide great enrichment (chewing and climbing) and look fantastic in their tanks as well.
