Dog Itch Relief & Hot Spot Treatment

Dogs sometimes develop hot spots—red, inflamed, moist areas on the skin that can feel itchy, irritated, or painful. Luckily, there are many over-the-counter remedies that can provide effective hot spot relief for dogs. If you notice your dog licking, scratching, or chewing his skin in a certain area and the spot looks swollen or raw with some discharge, he may have a hot spot. Causes of hot spots in dogs include:

• Allergies
• Insect bites
• Parasites
• Ear infection
• Anal gland issues
• Poor grooming
• Bacterial or fungal skin infection
• Stress, anxiety, or boredom
• Excessive moisture

Hot spot treatments that are also anti-itch for dogs can sometimes clear up the problem by removing the source of irritation. But it's important to see your vet promptly if you think your dog has a hot spot, since skin lesions can become a serious health issue if left untreated.

Your vet should be able to determine the cause of the hot spot and recommend prescription or over-the-counter dog hot spot medication. Depending on the cause, the treatment may involve antibacterial, antifungal, or antiparasitic medication or an antihistamine or steroid to reduce swelling. Other medications that can provide hot spot relief for dogs include antiseptic sprays, drying agents, medicated wipes, and skin-soothing ointments.
