Are the flags always necessary? My question is then if they were picked up for mowing the lawn, they'd have to be set up all over again every time in the exact same spots?
The flags are not necessary, they serve as a training barrier so your dog knows when they see a flag they're close to the border.

What does a dog do once you do want to walk him past the flags w/o the collar to say take him/her for a walk in the woods? Does it cause confusion?
Once your pet learns the Boundary Zone, they will be reluctant to cross it for walks or car rides. There are a couple options recommended Option 1: Replace the Receiver Collar with a regular collar. Put your pet in a car that is within the Pet Area and drive him out of the Pet Area. Option 2: Replac...more e the Receiver Collar with a regular collar and leash. Walk your pet out of the Pet Area while giving a command such as “OK” at a specific place of the Boundary Zone (the end of your driveway, sidewalk, etc.). Always leave the Pet Area with a leash at this place and your pet will associate leaving the Pet Area only on a leash, only at this place, and only with a person. You may initially need to convince your pet to leave the Pet Area with a food treat and lots of praise. You may also carry your pet out of the Pet Area.

Can you make your own pattern? Meaning there isn’t much space out front before the road and the yard outback is larger. Is there a way to change the pattern?
The boundary zone has a range that can be adjusted to as little as 10 feet, or up to a 90 feet radius. There is an adjustable dial on the front of the transmitter to adjust boundary. This wireless system covers a minimum circular area of 10-15 feet in diameter to 180 feet in diameter.
