My 2yr doberman had been on royal canine puppy, then graduated to adult large dog. At first I didn't attribute her itching to food. But I changed her environment (different bed materials), changed shampoo (now successfully using head and shoulders shampoo/conditioner with eucalyptus), and then tried adding biotin and salmon oil to her food. Each step gave slight improvement. I've also added a general probiotic top dressing I got from the farm feed store. So I consulted a vet. My dog is already on trifexis for parasites, so no mange. And yet there were times I took pity on her and gave her a benedryl because the itching was driving her crazy! Vet recommended looking at the protein source. The adult dry food is chicken based, so I picked arcana because of the single source, not based on birds. It is a perfect fit for my dog. About a week after completely switching over I had some cooked chicken leftovers without bones. I topped her food with it and an hour later we had diarrhea, heaving, and insatiable itching with ear slaps! Definitely a problem with chicken. I've added cooked pork, different squashes, split pea soup, duck eggs, and various nuts since switching to arcana beef and pumpkin and had no allergy reactions. So I'm very confident we have determined chicken was our culprit. You will need to sleuth out your dogs solutions, but this is a great base food to start with.
This made our dog very sick to her stomach for days (and kept us up all night letting her out). Her stomach has been great with the lamb & apple recipe but a few days into this variety she’s been sick. I don’t know if it’s a contaminated bag or if some of the ingredients (pumpkin?) just don’t sick right but we will be going back to other flavors of both the dry and wet acana. Bummer to waste ~$100.
