At first, I was skeptical that I’d notice any real difference in my flock’s behavior with this new feed, PenPals Select Layer. I spoil them with a pretty “curated” diet, after all! But wow — right from the start, I saw a big change at mealtime. We have a flock of five hens and one rooster who free-range in our horse pasture. Before switching, their morning routine was to race to the pasture for grasses and bugs, stopping by the breakfast rations only here and there. When we introduced the Select Layer feed, their priorities changed instantly. Instead of heading straight for the pasture, they made a beeline for the feed containers before venturing out. I guess my so-called “curated” rations weren’t nearly as enticing as I thought!
A cost-saving match for Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve

After years of feeding my hens Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve, I decided to try ADM Pen Pals Select Layer to see how it compared. Nutritionally, they’re identical—both are 17% protein and come in 50-lb bags. The big difference? As of August 2025, ADM is about $4 less per 50lb bag, which works out to roughly 8¢ less per pound. Presentation-wise, Kalmbach wins with its beautiful bag design, while ADM comes in a plain white sack stamped “FEED” with a small tag at the bottom. That said, my hens don’t care about packaging—they dove into the ADM feed, happily eating from my hand and the feeder. I even compared them side-by-side in my palm (Kalmbach on the left, ADM on the right) and could see no difference in appearance. Given the identical nutrition, my flock’s enthusiasm, and the cost savings, I’m switching to ADM Pen Pals Select Layer. Highly recommended if you want premium layer feed without the premium price.
The Little Rascals love it! 5 clucks!
I buy 3 different bags of food for my chickens. Scratch grains, oyster shells and pellets. With this food I will eliminate all 3 bags and just buy this. No animal
I buy 3 different bags of food for my chickens. Scratch grains, oyster shells and pellets. With this food I will eliminate all 3 bags and just buy this. No animal by products, artificial colors or antibiotics. Great for laying chickens. My chickens love it. My wallet will love it. My back for not lugging 3 different bags of food. Their poops are better, if chicken poop can be better! Lol

The ladies in our chicken village give this four out of five clucks! We were careful to blend the Pen Pals food with their existing food for a short while before fully transitioning. It has such a nice variety mixed together, which alleviates the need to buy multiple bags of pellets and seeds to put together manually. There were three or four ingredients, however, that our picky gals weren't very crazy about that resulted in some waste. Every flock is different! Again, though, this is a nice product worth trying.
The real deal
Whole grains, beans and other components. This is the real deal! No ground powder/scant mess, only whole grains and such. Chickens love it. Smells sweet like molasses
Whole grains, beans and other components. This is the real deal! No ground powder/scant mess, only whole grains and such. Chickens love it. Smells sweet like molasses and chicks come running when I get the bin out. Haven’t had it long enough to determine what it does to egg production, my ladies are all in full molt for the fall and I can attest to the increase in energy during the molt
Great Quality Not Quite Enough Protein for Silkies

I recently tried ADP Pen Pals Select feed and was impressed overall. The feed smelled fresh right out of the bag, and my flock took to it immediately, no hesitation, which is always a good sign. That said, the protein content is a bit lower than what my silkies need. While it's perfectly suitable for most backyard flocks, silkies tend to require a bit more protein to thrive, especially during molting or high-growth periods. I’ve started supplementing with a bit of high-protein crumble and mealworms to balance things out. If your flock doesn’t have special protein needs, this is a fantastic, well-balanced option. For those with more delicate or ornamental breeds, just be ready to boost the protein a bit. Still, very happy with the quality and freshness, will likely buy again and just tweak as needed
Great ingredients, smells nice

Upon receiving this product I got in touch with the company to get more information on the ingredients, because the bag I got did not have them listed. I appreciate the thought and quality that goes into their proprietary blend, which is in the pellets, and no fillers. The only thing I would prefer is crumble vs. pellets as my spoiled chickens won’t eat pellets unless I soak them.

What I love about this chicken feed is the ingredients. Its not just pellets or crumbles but a mix of food including seeds. I'm not sure of the protein % as I could not find it on the bag. My chickens loved it but at $36 dollars a bag I can't afford to feed 30-40 birds. Also, my chickens wasted a lot of this feed on the ground and since its small seeds it went to waste once mixed in my sandy soil.

This layer feed has a nice selection of seeds and grains along with the pellets with not too much corn. My chickens readily ate most of it but they not fond of pellets in general. Seems like a good quality feed but the guaranteed analysis tag was lacking most of the information I would normally find on a similar product. Haven't used long term to judge egg production or health of the hens, but if your poultry likes pellets it's worth trying.
Wishing it wasn't pellets

I received this feed through Chewy's Pawsibilities program for a review of my honest feedback. My chickens absolutely love this feed and have devoured it, with one exception, they absolutely will not eat pellet feed. So due to the fact that this is pellet feed with other seeds and such, they eat only the extra add ins, and completely avoid the pellets completely. If they sold this feed with a crumble variation instead of pellets, I would purchase it every time I buy feed.
