FAQ
Q: How often should I test my cat/dog? What’s the best time of day to test? A: Your veterinarian is the best resource to recommend how often to test your pet’s blood glucose level. These recommendations can vary by pets, and some factors that can influence this decision include: • The type of insulin your pet is receiving and how often • If any changes to your pet’s insulin (dose, frequency, type, etc.) have occurred recently • If your pet is exhibiting abnormal clinical signs or behavior
Q: Are gloves required? A: When obtaining a blood sample, gloves are not required. However, since animal blood may be a potential source of disease, pet owners may choose to wear gloves.
Q: I’m having trouble getting a good blood sample, what do I do? A: Warming the area will help increase blood flow. Gently rub or apply a warm (not hot) cloth to the test site. If using a wet cloth, place the cloth inside a plastic bag to avoid diluting the blood sample. Additionally, a thin layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the test site prior to lancing. This can help the blood form a droplet without getting into the hair.
Q: Do I need to keep the code strip after I set up the device? A: A code strip is provided with each new pack of AlphaTrak 3 Test Strips. The code strip is used once to set the species lot code. If you lost the code strip before setting the lot code, you’ll need to purchase a new pack of AlphaTrak 3 test strips. We recommend keeping the code strip within the zippered carry case provided with the AlphaTrak 3 Starter Kit.
Q: How old does my cat or dog need to be to be tested? A: There is no minimum age of usage for AlphaTrak 3. You should consult with your veterinarian to determine what is recommended for your pet.
Q: Why do I need to switch between cat or dog on the meter? A: Cats and dogs differ in the distribution of glucose in the blood. The unique codes in the AlphaTrak 3 glucose monitoring system account for these species differences to deliver accurate results for both cats and dogs.
Q: How do I switch between cat or dog on the meter? A: You can easily switch between species without the code strip: Simply insert a test strip and once the blood drop appears on the screen, press and hold “c” and at the same time press “m”. An icon corresponding to the selected species will appear.
Q: When should I do a control solution test? A: A control solution test should be performed with every new pack of strips. It allows you to practice testing without using animal blood, confirm that the meter and test strips are working properly, or to verify spurious blood glucose test results. It may be advisable to perform a control solution test before a ‘blood glucose curve’.
Q: How do I perform a control solution test? A: To perform a control solution test: 1. Check the expiration date of control solution and test strip. 2. Insert test strip into meter to turn it on. 3. Set the correct species code by pressing and holding “c”, and then at the same time press “m”. 4. Select the control test setting by pressing “c” to for 3 seconds until you see the control solution bottle icon on the display. Failure to select the correct setting will product inaccurate results. 5. Apply control solution to the front edge of the test strip. 6. Compare the control solution result to the test range printed on the test strip vial.

We were using my mom’s Glock meter and it was ll over the place with readings. We kept making EVC visits which are COSTLY. We ordered one calibrated for dogs and it’s reading more accurate and we are able to monitor our baby’s levels with more confidence. We are first time diabetic dog parents and the first month was super stressful and emotional. After getting this glucometer I’m able to take care of her needs at home to keep her happy and healthy!!!
Not accurate always.

The strips that came with the purchase of Alpha Trak 3 monitor were always within 20 points of what ReliOn human monitor showed. But after that got over, I bought two new 50 pack strips from alpha Trak 3 they were inaccurate, showing anywhere from 20 to 100 points difference from ReliOn. Why should the quality of these strips change from bottle to bottle??? Why is there no consistency? I trust reliOn human meter more. It is accurate and consistent and I just have to make sure that my cat's BG levels match the normal and regulated range on reliOn. Alpha Trak 3 is ridiculously expensive, there is 0 reason to make it this expensive. And yet Inaccurate mostly.
Easy to use; Requires very little blood for a reading
After much research I decided on this monitor. I have now used it for over a month. It is easy to use and requires very little blood to get an accurate reading
After much research I decided on this monitor. I have now used it for over a month. It is easy to use and requires very little blood to get an accurate reading. My cat is very sensitive and he handles this without any issues at all. He has absolutely no adverse reaction at all, but seems to just love having his ears rubbed and the attention. The instructions are easy to understand and put to use. Also, You Tube has very helpful videos with this device. This device has assisted us in knowing that our precious boy was in remission with his diabetes. It saved us from many upsetting trips to the vet. We were able to supply our vet with detailed information from home, making our boy's care easier. If you have a diabetic cat, I recommend this product. It is very helpful in monitoring AND it is not hurtful or upsetting to the cat.
Comfort at home
We have a diabetic dog and being able to check his sugar at home is very comforting. The easiness of using the glucometer made testing my dog better and cheaper

Called chewy about problem with device. They referred me to Alpha Trac company. Thought issue was resolved after that conversation but still inconsistencies in readings. I’m not trusting it. Not sure what to do. I often just get error readings after doing all steps correctly. I used my old Alpha Trac for 2 years before it broke. But the new one has never worked right
Better than the Alphatrak 2 HOWEVER
Had to call the company NO where do they say control test solution do not shake AND MUST DROP 2 drops before putting (wasting) on test strip BEFORE .... the instructions

Great product, uncooperative cat!
The item is excellent when (and if) you can get a cat to sit still while getting the blood from his ear. The kit and the cat go to the vet and she uses it to get
The item is excellent when (and if) you can get a cat to sit still while getting the blood from his ear. The kit and the cat go to the vet and she uses it to get his blood. Of course my Felix sits still for her!
Great for cats but expensive test strips
This test kit is super easy to use for cats. The monitor and strips need less blood than others, so it is easier to test. The yes strips, however, are very expensive

Works great
Used this glucometer to verify if my other one, that is for humans was accurate. They were both pretty close. The glucometer is really easy to use and it's great
Used this glucometer to verify if my other one, that is for humans was accurate. They were both pretty close. The glucometer is really easy to use and it's great if you need to use it for other species of animals.
