The breed standard for Golden Retriever suggest that the tailbones should extend to, but not past, the hock bone. So when your dog's tail is trimmed, stand your dog properly and comb all of the tailcoat towards the tip and hold the tail down. Trim off the hair (bluntly with thinning shears) that extends past the hock. Now here is a good trick, if the tail bone extends past the hock, trim the coat to the end of the tailbone and if the tail bone is to short, trim the coat off at the hock you can also think of it as a longer bodied dog gets a shorter tail and a short bodied dog gets a longer tail. Once you have trimmed to desired length, use your thinning shears to round out the tip of the tail for a softer curve into the tail. Lastly, pull the tail out, thin out the underside of the base of the tail and comb down and neaten any long scragglies hanging down from the flag of the tail still keeping in mind the roundness of the tail.
This magnificent and rare breed has a Rustic Coat. Even if they are a pet, Rustic coats require a more specialized care. Most pet owners do not want their dogs shaved down every time they come in for a groom. In this dog’s case, that is what was happening and you can see the amount of lint I removed from her coat after her first visit. The darker coats or thinner coats can be worked in 3 week increments meaning after this initial rake out and haircut visit she will start coming in every 3 weeks to alternate a rake out and bath versus the same in addition to a haircut. The lighter coats tend to produce more undercoat and mat up faster. They might require an every 1-3 week maintenance program depending on the thickness of the coat.
This 10 in comb is a great size - I like that it has a smaller side with needles that are closer together. I mostly use this comb to get close to the skin and make sure my dog isn't matting. I use a slicker brush for a more thorough removal of loose fur.
Works well on curly puppy goldendoodle fur. The real test will be when his fur changes.
I had been trying to find some grooming tools that work on the fur of a super curly dootle .I found it!
This is a quality metal comb and is reasonably comfortable to hold. Tried a couple of other combs with shorter teeth, but this one was recommended by our groomer. It does a much better job on our goldendoodle's thick, curly hair and helps tremendously to get mats out. Bought a second one so we can each use one. We use the wider spaced end first, and then the other after tangles are broken down. The slicker brush we have is OK, but does not get deep enough into the curly hair to break up the deep mat areas. If used correctly a couple of times/week, will save alot of time fighting matting in doodle hair and your groomer will appreciate it, too.
Best investment EVER!!!!! I have bought so many combs and brushes that either snapped or broke. Nothing got the under coat out. I have a long haired GS and the first time I used this comb I got more off of him than I did in a year!!!
did not get hair out, he wanted to play with comb.
I wanted a good comb for my mini-poodle after his groomer warmed me about bad ones on the market. I found this one, a good solid comb, and had to have it for my sweet boy. I received and have used it to comb those hairs close to his skin. Perfect!
Ever since getting my adorable Persian, it’s been a never-ending battle to get him groomed every day . . . until now. This comb changed everything! We’ve gone from trying to groom a squirming, flailing mound of fluff, to easily combing through him as he stretches back and purrs. The longer teeth get right down to the skin, and smoothly pull out the loose fluff that would otherwise turn to mats. I chose the smaller of the two combs, and it’s still quite large and substantial. Terrific find!
I am two weeks into Maine Coon coat maintenance and this comb came recommended as gold standard and ‘if you can only own just one comb’ Sturdy, will take efforts to break or bend the metal teeth.
This comb works we’ll on my two long hair cats. Much better than regular plastic combs. It is a great addition to my sicker brush and furminator.
