About API Water Conditioners

It’s Smart To Be Proactive!

The best way to keep your aquarium clean is to maintain good water quality. This will help keep your fish strong and vibrant and prevent disease. Water conditioners and test kits from API can help you keep your aquarium water safe and healthy.

How Do I Maintain a Healthy Environment?

It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to ensure it stays healthy for your fish.  In addition, a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% will help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to your fish.

Feed Twice Daily and Test Water Weekly

Feed your fish twice a day, check their water temperature, and observe them to make sure they are active. You should also test water quality weekly for optimal safety. For fish to thrive, their water must closely match that of their natural environment—poor water quality can cause stress, illness and even fish loss. The 6 important parameters for healthy aquarium water are ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and water hardness (GH & KH). All of these can vary over time and are invisible to the eye.

Change Water and Restore the Ecosystem

In a closed aquarium environment, there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. That is why you should replace 25% of your aquarium water every two weeks, making sure to add water conditioner to your tap water to make it safe for your fish. You should also change your filter media and clean your gravel monthly. Adding beneficial nitrifying bacteria with API Quick Start when you do will help restore your aquarium’s fragile ecosystem and avoid disruption.

What Do API Products Do and When Do I Use Them?

API Test Kits

Use test kits weekly to monitor water quality parameters, which can vary over time and impact the health of your fish.

API Stress Zyme

Using this every week will help keep your aquarium clean and your gravel and ornaments sludge-free.

API Algaefix

Use weekly to control algae growth and keep aquarium glass, ornaments and plants clean.

API Stress Coat

Use every 2 weeks during water changes to make tap water safe, and when adding fish, or when fish are injured.

Questions & Answers

Is this a bicarbonate buffer? Or phosphate?
Answer by ChewyOct 22, 2017
This product is a phosphate buffer.

How much of this stuff do you have to add to a 75g aquarium to get it to work?
Answer by ChewyJan 01, 2020
Add 1 scoop for every 10 gallons of aquarium water. Repeat dose when pH test indicates a pH change of more than 0.2. Normally, one dose will set the pH. Some tap water sources used in freshwater aquariums are strongly buffered at pH 8.0 and above. In this case, two doses of API PROPER PH may be required to overcome the buffer system and reset the pH to a desirable level.

can I use this for my Betta fish
Answer by ChewyMar 28, 2022
This would not be recommended for a betta fish. Bettas prefer calm water with a pH between 6.8 and 7.5. The ideal pH level for betta fish is 7.0.

do I have to remove my fish to use this, and is it safe for plants
Answer by ChewyMar 28, 2022
The fish do not need to be removed from the aquarium during treatment. The API Brand of products are meant to be added to aquariums that include their inhabitants. Simply be sure to follow the directions on the packaging as far a dosage amounts and frequency of dosing, so that your wet pets remain safe. The powders in API Proper pH 7.5 bind to some trace elements which are needed as nutrients by live plants. Therefore, we do not recommend using these API Proper pH powders with live aquarium plants.

NOT for use in aquariums containing live plants!

I did not see anywhere when I bought this that it should not be used in aquariums with live plants. Even checking it now all I see is a FAQ answer which was posted after I bought this. I did not use this product so it might be 5 star but the product page, or video even, needs to call out this limitation. Maybe someone will read this and save a few bucks buying something they can't use.

Great Product!

I have a tank with oscars, blood parrots, a synodontis catfish and a Redfin shark who are picky when it comes to the PH of their home and are prone to not feel good with the slightest change. This helps so much…it gets my water babies feeling back to normal fast!
