The purpose of a horse halter is to facilitate securing and leading a horse. Horse halters are essential pieces of tack that are used for tying up, handling or leading horses. There are many styles to choose from, including rope halters, padded halters, breakaway halters and more.
You can leave a halter on a horse for as long as you are leading, tying or training him, but not for longer. You should never leave a halter on a horse who is unattended, as the halter may get caught up on something and injure your horse. Moreover, leaving halters on horses can be uncomfortable and cause irritation or distress. Halters, including the breakaway type of halter, should never be left on horses in pasture.
Put on a horse halter by first unbuckling it attaching the lead rope to it. Start on the left side and slowly guide the halter's nosepiece over your horse's muzzle, then pull the headstall over and behind his ears. It may help to use your right hand to gently guide your horse's head toward you so he doesn't pull away. Then, secure the halter using the attached fasteners. Be sure to calm and soothe your horse throughout the process and proceed slowly to avoid spooking him. Some people like to begin by looping the lead line loosely around the horse's neck for better control.
Horses prefer halter material that is smooth and non-irritating, and halters made from wider pieces may exert less pressure on a horse's face. That said, there are a variety of halter materials to choose from, and each has its own benefits and uses. Leather halters are the traditional choice, and they are preferred by many riders because they will break if they get caught on something. Nylon halters are less prone to breaking and can be useful if you have a horse who is difficult to control. Rope halters are often used for training horses, but they are much less comfortable and shouldn't be left on for too long.
