The design makes this a very sturdy pole feeder. The base screws into the ground 20 inches. It's strategically designed to use a screwdriver for leverage. I wasn’t sure how hard it might be because our ground is a mixture of clay and stone, but it wasn’t hard to do, and it puts the base deep into the ground. The 3 pole pieces were easy to attach, the bottom one supported by a screw, making the base even more sturdy. I placed the squirrel baffle approximately 4 feet off the ground as recommended and it's working!! I did do a small modification so I could put my camera bird feeder on the pole, which proves no squirrels by the pictures it's taking! I have placed a plant on one side and a dish feeder on the other side that draws butterflies. My plans for the winter will be to put up suet feeders. Our daily weather has been very humid with thunderstorms bringing plenty of rain and wind and the feeder is holding its own.
